As is shown in the chart, the percentage of people commuting between to work by bicycle, on bus and by driving is roughly 61%, 30% and 9% in 2000 and approximately 24%, 40% and 36% in 2014 respectively. Apparently, the means of commuting transportation have significantly changed over the past years.
What accounts for the change? From my perspective, at least three factors contribute to the change. To begin with, the change is closely related to the rapidly rising income of Chinese people and thus more people can afford cars. More importantly, the change has a lot to do with the turning of people’s attitude and outlook on life and more people pursue comfortable transportation. The improved public transportation services and convenient routes encourage more people to abandon bicycles.
Advances of the society in all aspects will make the change bound to continue for a few years in the future. As far as I am concerned, it is a positive change and should be encouraged, for it is beneficial not merely to individuals but to the society.
