As is clearly depicted in the chart, some dramatic changes have taken place in both the urban and rural populations in the past 20 years. From the chart, we can see that the urban population went up sharply from 300 million in 1990 to 666 million in 2010. On the contrary, the rural population was on a steady decline, from 834 million to 674 million.
There are some major reasons that can account for this trend. First and foremost, with the rapid development of our economy, there is an increasing demand for a high-quality life, so big cities have become more attractive to young people than rural areas. What's more, more and more people have flooded into cities to pursue their dreams, promoting the sharp increase in the urban population. Last but not least, there is no doubt that this phenomenon has much to do with the policies that our government has adopted to speed up China's urbanization.
Taking all these factors into consideration, we may reasonably predict that the present situation will continue for quite a while in the forthcoming years. And if this trend can be kept and guided properly, our life as well as our society will be made better.
