2、Feast On Turkey and Good Wishes at Thanksgiving
Four weeks ago, US children dressed as monsters and asked for sweets. That was Halloween. In a few weeks American houses will be red and green and filled with presents. For Christmas.
As if all this isn't enough, on Thursday this week, America will enjoy another festival-Thanksgiving.
Children will have two days off school, shops will close and houses will be filled with families enjoying mountains of food.
Every year, in Gainesville, Florida, all entire class celebrate Thanksgiving together. The class dresses up and puts on plays for their families. After the plays the families share a feast of traditional Thanksgiving foods like turkey and pumpkin pie.
Dean Foster, an ll-year-old boy will take part in this celebration. He said: "I love Thanksgiving because it means time off school, lots of nice food and a happy family."
His brother Ben, nine, said: "the best thing about Thanksgiving, is that when it is finished, it is time to start Christmas."
But behind the food and the large amount of money spent there is another message. On Thursday evening, Dean and Ben's family will make a basket and put it on the table as they eat their evening meal.
Each of them will write a list of things that they are thankful for and place the paper in the basket. The family will read the pieces of paper and take time to thank God and each other for providing them with comfortable and happy lives.
Thanksgiving is a traditional festival that started in 1621, when the first pilgrims arrived in the US to start a new life. After a hard year, they had a big autumn harvest. They held a feast and invited the native American Indians along to thank God for giving them enough food.
Many countries celebrate Thanksgiving. They often fall after the fields have been harvested and the crops collected for winter.
The first pilgrims settled in the United States in________.

3、Continuing Education
1 People around the world agree that education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate students only for the aim of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life. Life is varied; so is education.
2 Ideas about education are more specified in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.
3 Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones. Scientists, mechanics, secretaries, barbers and cooks can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.
4 Continuing education classes give more adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. There are only some of the classes available.
5 Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.
6 Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evenings, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.
Paragraph 6 ____

A.Ideas bout education in the U. S.

B.Advantages of continuing education

C.Good opportunity to learn new skills

D.Most classes are in the evening

E.Working people have easy access

F.Education helps cooks find a better job

4、A New Doctors' Dilemma
When Christian Barnard, a South African doctor, performed the first human heart transplant in1967, the result was a worldwide moral debate on the ethics of transplanting organs. Hearts were not the first human organs to be transplanted but, in this case, if a donor gave his or her heart, he or she would obviously and necessarily die (or be dead). Kidney transplants, which were already quite common in 1967, often involved the transfer of a single kidney from a close living relative. The chances of survival of the donor were somewhat diminished because he now had only one kidney and if that kidney were affected by disease, he would not have a healthy kidney in reserve. Nevertheless, the donor would certainly not necessarily die.
Undoubtedly, another reason why the first heart transplant was so controversial was the fact that we associate so many personality traits with the heart. Questions were asked of the type: "If a person had a different heart, would he still be the same person?", or "If doctors needed a dying person's heart, would they tend to declare him dead prematurely?", and so on.
Today, not only hearts and kidneys, but also such extremely delicate organs as lungs and livers, are transplanted. These developments have led to a far higher or proportion of successful operations and this, in turn, has led to greater demand for transplants. At the same time, many of the original moral questions surrounding heart transplants have been almost forgotten.
However, as a result of the heavy demand for organs, a new moral dilemma has emerged. For example, in the United States there are many people who would survive iflungs were available for transplanting. In fact, about 80% of them die before a suitable donor is found. In these circumstances who would decide if a donor were found whose lungs were equally suitable for two potential recipients?
This problem is made worse by the fact that many patients, or their families, become desperate to find a donor. Some succeed in publicizing their situation in newspapers, to politicians or on television. Sometimes, as a result, suitable donors are found. But what would happen if another patient needed the organ more than the one who got the publicity? Who would decide if the other patient should get the organ? Would it be the doctors? Or the donor? Or the family who got the publicity? If such a dilemma developed it would be very difficult to resolve and it would be a matter of life or death to the patients involved.
According to the passage, the new moral dilemma is the result of____.【

A.a higher proportion of successful operations.

B.too few human organs for too many potential recipients.

C.the argument whether some delicate organs should be transplanted.

D.so many failures in organ transplanting.

5、Preparations for Interview
The first thing you have to prepare for a job interview is to write your resume. Most of all, the resume should emphasize all the related experience you have had. The resume should be clear and you should keep in mind that the person reading it will probably be reading many other resumes. The best thing you can do is to . make it obvious why you can do the job better than anybody else. Your resume should be neat and if possible , typed, the biggest advantage of a typed resume is that it is easy to read.
Once you have organized your resume, check your closet. Special attention should be allowed to what you will wear for the interview. You don't want to be dressed up as if you were going to a party, but you also don't want to be over-dressed. You should consider setting your hair trimmed before the interview. Remember that neatness counts. You should be neat in your appearance as well as in resume.
Finally, you must keep in mind that employers do not like people to smoke or chew gum during an interview. The basic reason for this may be that you appear too relaxed. Remember you are not visiting a friend; you are trying to get a job. If you ______ all of the above advice, you have a good chance of getting the job you desire.

A.seek

B.listen

C.keep

6、Intelligent Machines
1. Medical scientists are already putting computer chips (芯片) directly into the brain to help people who have Parkinson's disease, but in what other ways might computer technology be able to help us? Ray Kurzweil is author of the successful book The Age of Intelligent Machines and is one of the world's best computer research scientists. He is researching the possibilities.
2. Kurzweil gets computers to recognize voices. An example of this is Ramona; the virtual (虚拟的) hostess of Kurzweil's homepage, who is programmed to understand what you say. Visitors to the site can have their conversations with her, and Ramona also dances and sings.
3. Kurzweil uses this technology to help people with physical disabilities. One of his ideas is a "seeing machine". This will be "like a friend that could describe what is going on in the visible world", he explains. Blind people will use a visual sensor (探测器) which will probably be built into a pair of sunglasses. This sensor will describe to the person everything it sees.
4. Another idea, which is likely to help deaf people, is the "listening machine". This invention will recognize millions of words and understand any speaker. The listening machine will also be able to trans late into other languages, so even people without hearing problems are likely to be interested in using it.
5. But it is not just about helping people with disabilities. Looking further into the future, Kurzweil sees a time when we will be able to download our entire consciousness onto a computer. This technology probably won't be ready for at least 50 years, but when it arrives, it means our minds will be able to live forever.
Ramona is able to understand ____.

A.what you say

B.a pair of sunglasses

C.the listening machine

D.a visual sensor

E.who have disabilities

F.living forever in a computer

An example of this is Ramona, the virtual hostess of Kurzweil's homepage, who is programmed to understand what you say.

7、Money or Friendship or Both
1. Friends and money don't mix. It's a dangerous combination since a fight over money is one of the fastest ways to end a friendship. But what if a friend asks you to tend him or her some money? If you don't lend your friend the money, you risk losing the friend. If you do lend your friend the money, you risk losing both the friendship and your money.
2. We have to face facts, so here are some situations you might run across with your buddies (伙伴) and some helpful tips (忠告) on how to deal with them. Thinking about why this person needs to borrow in the first place. If he is always living beyond his means, it is his fault, not yours. Any Sensible person would not put himself in a position of debt so often. So simply say "no" to this friend. Even if your friend really needs that money for emergency use and you are willing to help him, before you dive into your pocket, follow this reality check: Do you have the extra money? Are you sure you don't need it? Are you willing to write off that amount if it's not returned? If your answers are negative, do yourself a favor and say "no".
3. Let's assume you can't stand saying "no" to your friend because you don't want him living off cat food. What do you do? Write down these details on a sheet of paper before opening up your wallet:
Amount of the loan.
Date of the loan.
Time of repayment.
Amount of interest (if any).
Lender's and borrower's signature.
This will at least keep the borrower from forgetting the loan so easily, If your friend's loan is past due, it's important that you ask him-and it's actually not rude. The longer you wait, the more you are brood (忧伤), and the more your resentment builds.
4. You can send him a friendly reminder via E - mail. Tell him something like "I'm going over my bank account and I'm just wondering when we'll be able to settle that money thing." E - mail saves you from an uncomfortable face - to - face confrontation. There is almost no chance of turning a bad reaction into an argument. Unlike a public conversation, an E - mail message will always be private.
5. After asking two or three times, you might have to write it off. That's what happens. If he just doesn't have the money or is unwilling, then what kind of friend is that?
Paragraph 3 ____

A.Time to Break off a Friendship

B.Unconditional Assistance to Friends in Need

C.Things to Consider When You Have to Say "No" to Your Friend

D.Things to Think over When You Don't Want Your Friend to Eat Cat Food

E.Strategies for Borrowing Money

F.Advantages of E - mail in Handling Money Issues

Things to Think over When You Don't Want Your Friend to Eat Cat Food,就是对本段的概括,所以答案是D。

8、Shopping at Second - hand Clothing Stores
When 33 years old Pete Barth was in college, shopping at second - hand clothing stores was just something he did-"like changing the tires on his car." He looked at his budget and decided he could save a lot of money by shopping for clothes at thrift shops.
"Even new clothes are fairly disposable (用后即丢掉的) and wear out after a couple of years," Barth said. "In thrift shops, you can find some great stuff whose quality is better than new clothes."
Since then, Barth, who works at a Goodwill thrift shop in the US state of Florida, has found that there are all kinds of reasons for shopping for second - hand clothing. Some people, like him, shop to save money. Some shop for a crazy - looking shirt. And some shop as a means of conserving energy and helping the environment.
Pat Akins, an accountant at a Florida Salvation Army (SA) (救世军) thrift shop, said that, for her, shopping at thrift shops is a way to help the environment.
"When my daughter was little, we looked at it as recycling," Akins said: "Also, why pay 30 dollars for a new coat when you can get another one for a lot less?"
Akins said that the SA has shops all over the US-"some as big as department stores". All of the clothes are donated (捐赠), and when they have a surplus (盈余), they'll have "stuff a bag" specials, where customers can fill a grocery sack with clothes for only 5 or 10 dollars.
Julia Stocum, 22, points out, however, that the huge amount of second - hand clothing in the US is the result of American wastefulness.
"I'd say that second - hand stores are the result of our wasteful, materialistic culture," said Slocum, who works for a pro - conservation organization, the center of a New American Dream. "Thrift shops prevent waste from going to landfills (垃圾填埋场), They give clothing a second life and provide cheaper clothing for those who can't afford to buy new ones and generate (创造) income for charities. They also provide a way for the wealthy and middle classes to shed (摆脱) the guilt for their level of consumption."
The word "thrift" in paragraph 1 could be best replaced by【单选题】

A.charity.

B.one dollar.

C.first class.

D.two dollars.

9、One-Room Schools
One-room schools are part of the heritage of the United States, and the mention of them makes people feel a longing for "the way things were." One - room schools are an endangered species (种类), however. For more than a hundred years, one - room schools have been systematically shut down and their students were sent away to centralized schools. As recently as 1930 there were 149,000 one - room schools in the United States. By 1970 there were 1,800. Today, of the nearly 800 remaining one - room schools, more than 350 are in Nebraska. The rest are spread through a few other states that have on their road maps wide - open spaces between towns.
Now that there are hardly any left, educators are beginning to think that maybe there is something yet to be learned from one - room schools, something that served the pioneers that might serve as well today. Progressive educators have come up with new names like "peer - group teaching" and "multi - age grouping" for educational procedures that occur naturally in the one - room schools. In a one - room school the children teach each other because the teacher is busy part of the time teaching someone else. The fourth grader can work at the fifth grade level in math and the third grade level in English without the bad name associated with being left back or the pressures of being skipped (超过) ahead. A youngster with a learning disability can find his or her own level without being separated from other pupils. A few hours in a small school that has only one classroom and it becomes clear why so many parents feel that one of the advantages of living in Nebraska is that their children have to go to a one - room school.
It can be learned from paragraph 2 that many parents in Nebraska ____.【

A.don't like centralized schools

B.come from other states

C.received education in one - room schools

D.prefer rural life

10、Fighting for a Brighter Future for Women
When I was asked what it means to be a woman running for president, I always gave the same answer that I was proud to be running as a woman, but I was running because thought I'd be the best president.
But I am a woman and, like millions of women, I know there are still barriers and biases (偏见) out there, often unconscious, and I want to build an America that respects and embraces the potential of every last one of us.
I ran as a daughter who benefited from opportunities my mother never dreamed of. I ran as a mother who worried about my daughter's future and a mother who wants to leave all children brighter tomorrows.
To build that future I see, we must make sure that women and men understand the struggles of their grandmothers and their mothers, and that women enjoy equal opportunities, equal pay, and equal respect.
Let us resolve and work toward achieving very simple propositions (命题): there are no acceptable limits, and there are no acceptable prejudices in the 21 st century in our country.
You can also be so proud of it, from now on, it will be unremarkable for a woman to win primary state victories, unremarkable to let a woman in a close race to be our nominee (被提名者), unremarkable to think that a woman can be the president of the United States. And this is truly remarkable my friends.
We are disappointed that we couldn't go all of the way, especially the young people who put so much into this campaign. It would break my heart if, in falling short of my goal, I in any way discouraged any of you from pursuing yours.
We always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. And when you stumble (绰倒), keep faith. And, when you're knocked down, get right back up and never listen to anyone who says you can't or shouldn't go on.
As we gather here today in this historic, magnificent building, the 50th woman will leave the Earth and orbit (绕轨道运行) overhead. If we can blast 50 women into space, we will someday launch a woman into the White House.
Hillary Clinton will support Obama in the upcoming presidential election campaign.【

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Not mentioned
