1、English and English Community
1 There is no doubt that English is a useful language. The people who speak English today make up the largest speech community in the world with the exception of speakers of Chinese.
2 A speech community is similar to other kinds of communities. The people who make up the community share a common language. Often they live side by side, as they do in a neighborhood, a village, or a city. More often they form a whole country. National boundaries, however, are not always the same as the boundaries of a speech community. A speech community is any group of people who speak the same language no matter where they happen to live.
3 We may say that anyone who speaks English belongs to the English speech community. For convenience, we may divide the speakers into two groups: one in which the speakers use English as their native language, the other in which the speakers learn English as a second language for the purpose of education, commerce, and so on.
4 Learning a second language extends one's vision and expands the mind. The history and literature of a second language record the real and fictional lives of people and their culture; a knowledge of them adds to our ability to understand and to feel as they feel. Learning English as a
second language provides another means of communication through which the window of the entire English speech community becomes a part of our heritage.

4、Budget
A budget is a spending plan. It can help you spend money wisely. It can do this by cutting out wasteful spending. Of course, preparing a budget takes planning, and following a budget takes will power. Your budget should meet your family's needs and income.
The first step in creating a budget is to set your goals. What does your family need and wants. You must know this to work out the details of the budget. Keep goals realistic, in terms of income available. Then decide which goals are the most important.
The next step is estimating family income. Before you can plan wisely, you need to know how much money you have to spend! Write down all the money you expect to receive (wages, savings, interest, etc.) during the planned budget period.
After you have calculated how much money will be available, it is time to estimate expenses. List all of your family expenses.
If you are not satisfied with what you got for your money, look carefully at your spending. Studying your records will show where overspending has occurred. It will also point out poor buying habits.
It is also a good idea to set aside a small amount of money for emergencies. Every family has small emergencies: a blown tire, a broken device, or the need for minor medical care.
One advantage of keeping a record of your spending is that____.
【单选题】
A.you will remember how much you have already spent
B.you will know if you have spent more money than you planned
C.you will be able to tell your family what should not be bought
D.you will learn how to make a better budget next time
正确答案:B
答案解析:第5段讲了“Studying your records will show where overspending has occurred. It will also point out poor buying habits”(消费记录可以找出哪里超支了,或者可以发现一些不良购买习惯)。所以B是正确答案。
5、Looking to the Future
When a magazine for high-school students asked its readers what life would be like in twenty years, they said: Machines would be run by solar power. Buildings would rotate so they could follow the sun to take maximum advantage of its light and heat. Walls would "radiate light" and "change color with the push of a buttons." Food would be replaced by pills. School would be taught "by electrical impulse while we sleep." Cars would have radar. Does this sound like the year 2000? Actually, the article was written in 1958 and the question was, "what will life be like in 1978?".
The future is much too important to simply guess about, the way the high school students did. So experts are regularly asked to predict accurately. By carefully studying the present, skilled businessmen, scientists, and politicians are supposedly able to figure out in advance what will happen. But can they? One expert on cities wrote: Cities of the future would not be crowded but would have space for farms and fields. People would travel to world in "airbuses" all-weather helicopters carrying up to 200 passengers. When a person left the airbus station he could drive a coin-operated car equipped with radar. ______ Does that sound familiar? If the exert had been accurate it would, because he was writing in 1957. His subject was "The city of 1982".
If the professionals sometimes sound like high-school students, it's probably because future study is still a new field. Here is an example for future study. Economic forecasting, or predicting what the economy will do, has been around for a long time. But there have been some big mistakes in this field, too. In early 1929, most forecasters saw an excellent future for the stock market. In October of that year, the stock market had its worst losses ever, ruining thousands of investors who had put their faith in financial foreseers.
One forecaster knew that predictions about the future would always be subject to significant errors. In 1957, H. J. Rand of the Rand Corporation was asked about the year 2000, "Only one thing is certain," he answered. " Children born today will have reached the age of 43."
【单选题】
A.In early 1929, most forecasters saw an excellent future for the stock market.
B.Children born today will have reached the age of 43.
C.Actually, the article was written in 1958 and the question was, "what will life be like in 1978?"
D.So experts are regularly asked to predict accurately.
E.Scientists are 80 percent accurate in predicting the future.
F.The radar equipment of cars would make traffic accidents "almost unheard off'.
正确答案:F
答案解析:本题前面一句说的是radar。选项F说了radar使用后的良好效果。所以选F是必然的。
6、Seeing Red Means Danger Ahead
The color red often means danger and by paying attention, accidents can be prevented. In the future, the color red also may help prevent danger at construction sites. Thanks to new work by engineers, bridge supports or other kinds of materials could one day contain a color switching material. It will turn red before a structure collapses or falls apart.
The secret behind the color switching material is a particular type of molecule. A molecule is a group of atoms held together by chemical bonds. Molecules come at all shapes and sizes, and make up everything. You can see, touch or feel. How a molecule behaves depends on what kinds of atoms it contains, and how they're held together.
When a polymer (聚合物) containing a color switching molecule called a mechanophore (机械响应性聚合物) which is about to break, it produce a color. When a polymer with mechanophore molecules becomes "injured" or weak, one of the mechanophore bonds breaks and the material turns red. "It's a really simple detection method. "says Nancy Sottos, one of the scientists who worked on the project. Sottos and her team tested the color switching polymers in their lab. The test results proved encouraging.
There is a way to get rid of the color light when a bright light is shone on the mechanophore.
The broken bond is fixed and the red color disappears. This "self-healing" may be a problem for engineers. They need to use the color changer in big construction projects that will be ______ in sunlight. And sunlight will make the mechanophore's warming system useless. Sottos and her fellow scientists still have a lot of work to do before the color switching molecules can be used outside the lab.
【单选题】
A.inside
B.beside
C.outside
D.above
正确答案:C
答案解析:后文有in sunlight,理解为材料暴露在太阳之下,选outside。
7、How to Be a Successful Businessperson
Have you ever wondered why some people are successful in business and others are not? Here's a story about one successful businessperson. He started out washing dishes and today he owns 168 restaurants.
Zubair Kazi was born in Bhatkal, a small town in southwest India. His dream was to be an airplane pilot, and when he was 16 years old, he learned to fly a small plane.
At the age of 23 and with just a little money in his pocket, Mr. Kazi moved to the United States. He hoped to get a job in the airplane industry in California. Instead, he ended up working for a company that rented cars.
While Mr. Kazi was working at the car rental(租赁的) company, he frequently ate at a nearby KFC restaurant. To save money on food, he decided to get a job with KFC. For two months, he worked as a cook's assistant. His job was to clean the kitchen and help the cook. "I didn't like it," Mr. Kazi says, "but I always did the best I could."
One day, Mr. Kazi's two co - workers failed to come to work. That day, Mr. Kazi did the work of all three people in the kitchen. This really impressed the owners of the restaurant.
A few months later, the owners needed a manager for a new restaurant. They gave the job to Mr. Kazi. He worked hard as the manager and soon the restaurant was making a profit.
A few years later, Mr. Kazi heard about a restaurant that was losing money. The restaurant was dirty inside and the food was terrible. Mr. Kazi borrowed money from a bank and bought the restaurant. For the first six months, Mr. Kazi worked in the restaurant from 8 a. m. to 10 p. m. , seven days a week. He and his wife cleaned up the restaurant, remodeled the front of the building, and improved the cooking. They also tried hard to please the customers. If someone had to wait more than ten minutes for their food, Mrs. Kazi gave them a free soda. Before long the restaurant was making a profit.
A year later, Mr. Kazi sold his restaurant for a profit. With the money he earned, he bought three more restaurants that were losing money. Again, he cleaned them up, improved the food, and retrained the employees. Before long these restaurants were making a profit, too.
Today Mr. Kazi owns 168 restaurants, but he isn't planning to stop there. He's looking for more poorly managed restaurants to buy. "I love it when I go to buy a restaurant and find it's a mess," Mr. Kazi says. "The only way it can go is up. "

9、Houses of the Future
What will houses be like in thirty years' time? No one really knows, but architects are trying to predict. What will our home be like then?
Future houses will have to be flexible. In thirty years' time even more of us will be working from home. So we will have to be able to use areas of the house for work for part of the day and for living for the rest. Families grow and change with children arriving, growing up and leaving home. _____. Nothing will be as fixed as it is now. The house will always be changing to meet changing needs.
Everyone agrees that in thirty years' time we will be living in "intelligent" houses. We will be able to talk to our kitchen machines and discuss with them what to do. Like this, "We'll be having a party this weekend. What food shall we cook?" And the machine will tell us what food we will have to buy and how to cook it. We will be able to leave most of the cooking to the machines, just tasting things from time to time to check.
The house of the future will be personal, each house will be different. You will be able to change the color of the wall easily. You won't have to paint them-you'll be able to tell the wall to change the color! And if you don't like the color the next day, you will be able to have a new one. The only thing you won't be able to do is move the house somewhere else!
【单选题】
A.You will be able to change the color of the wall easily.
B.The only thing you won't be able to do is move the house somewhere else!
C.And the machine will tell us what food we will have to buy and how to cook it.
D.What will our home be like then?
E.The house of the future will have to grow and change with the family.
F.The kids might take their bedrooms with them as they leave.

It's now a fair bet that we will never see the total extinction (灭绝) of the smallpox (天花) virus. When smallpox was completely got rid of in the world, scientists wanted to _____ the killer virus in the last two labs, one in the US and one in Russia. They asked: If smallpox has truly gone from the planet, what point was there in keeping these reserves?
In reality, of course, it was naive to imagine that everyone would let go of such a powerful potential weapon. Undoubtedly several nations still have a few vials (小药瓶). And the last "official" stocks of live Virus bred mistrust of the US and Russia, for no obvious gain.
Now American researchers have found an animal model of the human disease, opening the way for tests on new treatments and vaccines(疫苗). So once again there's a good reason to the virus, just in keep the disease puts in a reappearance.
How do we case with the mistrust of the US and Russia? deal. Keep the virus Simple international support in a well - guarded UN laboratory that's open to all countries. The US will object, of course, just as it with a multilateral (多边的) approach to just about everything. But it doesn't mean the idea is rejects. If the virus is useful, then let's wrong it the servant of all humanity make not just a part of it.
【单选题】
A.destroy
B.improve
C.change
D.transport
