(4)But as the wage increased later to daily $10, it proved a critical component of Ford's dream to make the automobile accessible to all The critics were too stupid to understand that because Ford had lowered his costs per car, the higher wages didn't matter, except for making it possible for more people to buy cars.

4、Status of Teachers in America
At present, in many American cities especially, many teachers in the public schools say they are underpaid. They point to jobs such as secretary or truck driver, which often pay more to start than that of the teacher. In many other fields, such as law, medicine, computer science, a beginning worker may make more than a teacher who has taught for several year.
Teaching has never been a profession that attracted people interested in high salaries. It is by history a profession that has provided rewards in addition to money, the satisfaction of sharing knowledge, of influencing others, of guiding young people. But in the past several years, there are more difficulties in teaching, for many, than there are rewards.
Unruly students, who would have chosen teaching as their life career in the past, are going into other fields.
Another reason for this change in teacher candidates is the changing status of women in the United States. Until the late 1960s and 1970s, one of the most popular choices for women was teaching. But as other professions, such as law and medicine opened up to women, women stopped pouring into teacher training programs. Thus, a major pool of excellent candidates for the teaching profession dwindled(减少).
Bit by bit government officials and others realized that the status of the teacher had suffered. They talked about change. But change in a vast society like the United States is not easy. People's attitudes have formed over many years, and sometimes change takes many years.
Why do school teachers turn to other professions?
【单选题】

A.Because of the unruly students and large classes.

B.Because of the difficulties of teaching as well as a lack of money, support and understanding.

C.Because of the attracting power of other jobs.

D.Because of a lack of satisfaction 'of sharing knowledge and influencing others.

正确答案:B

答案解析:文中提出了两个主要原因:underpaid与more difficulty in teaching,因此选B。

5、Preparations for Interview
The first thing you have to prepare for a job interview is to write your resume. Most of all, the resume should emphasize all the related experience you have had. The resume should be clear and you should keep in mind that the person reading it will probably be reading many other resumes. The best thing you can do is to . make it obvious why you can do the job better than anybody else. Your resume should be neat and if possible , typed, the biggest advantage of a typed resume is that it is easy to read.
____ you have organized your resume, check your closet. Special attention should be allowed to what you will wear for the interview. You don't want to be dressed up as if you were going to a party, but you also don't want to be over-dressed. You should consider setting your hair trimmed before the interview. Remember that neatness counts. You should be neat in your appearance as well as in resume.
Finally, you must keep in mind that employers do not like people to smoke or chew gum during an interview. The basic reason for this may be that you appear too relaxed. Remember you are not visiting a friend; you are trying to get a job. If you follow all of the above advice, you have a good chance of getting the job you desire.

B.Immediately

C.The minute

D.Once

6、Woman work
Though some people have suggested that women should return to housework in order to leave more jobs for men, the idea has been rejected by both women and men in public opinion polls.
Lately some union officials have suggested that too many women are employed in types of work more suitable for men and that women should step aside to make way for unemployed young men. They argue that women, especially women in their childbearing years,
____ delay economic development and result in productivity, poor quality and inefficiency.
To solve the problem, they suggested that working women stay at home while their husbands or brothers were given double wages. They argue that under these circumstances, families would remain their same level of income, and women could run the house and raise children much better,
The suggestion, however , has been flatly rejected by 9 0ut of 10 people polled .
Some other people have suggested another way called "phased employment" theory. The theory suggests that a woman worker take leave from her job when she is seven months pregnant and stay off the job until her baby reaches the age of 3. It suggested that women on leave receive 75 percent of their normal salary and be allowed to return to work after the three-year period. This will benefit children, women, their families and the society and it definitely seems to be more acceptable than the suggestion that women return to their homes forever.

7、Intelligent Machines
1. Medical scientists are already putting computer chips (芯片) directly into the brain to help people who have Parkinson's disease, but in what other ways might computer technology be able to help us? Ray Kurzweil is author of the successful book The Age of Intelligent Machines and is one of the world's best computer research scientists. He is researching the possibilities.
2. Kurzweil gets computers to recognize voices. An example of this is Ramona; the virtual (虚拟的) hostess of Kurzweil's homepage, who is programmed to understand what you say. Visitors to the site can have their conversations with her, and Ramona also dances and sings.
3. Kurzweil uses this technology to help people with physical disabilities. One of his ideas is a "seeing machine". This will be "like a friend that could describe what is going on in the visible world", he explains. Blind people will use a visual sensor (探测器) which will probably be built into a pair of sunglasses. This sensor will describe to the person everything it sees.
4. Another idea, which is likely to help deaf people, is the "listening machine". This invention will recognize millions of words and understand any speaker. The listening machine will also be able to trans late into other languages, so even people without hearing problems are likely to be interested in using it.
5. But it is not just about helping people with disabilities. Looking further into the future, Kurzweil sees a time when we will be able to download our entire consciousness onto a computer. This technology probably won't be ready for at least 50 years, but when it arrives, it means our minds will be able to live forever.
Ray Kurzweil works with computers to help people ____.

8、Life at Aichi University
I'm Yamamoto Mika, a 22 years old Japanese girl. I'd like to invite you to Aichi University so you can understand my life.
Our university has a close relationship with China and my department is the only one of its kind in Japan. My courses include the Chinese language, modern Chinese politics and economics. I love Chinese culture and I have been to Tianjin as an exchange student.
In Japan, our courses are divided into compulsory, optional and specialized courses. However, we have a flexible schedule. We can choose classes from a wide range of options.
Many students finish the compulsory courses in three years so that they can have one year without any classes. They often use this period of time to study abroad, conduct research and travel. Many students even suspend their study for additional study - abroad opportunities,
Japanese universities encourage students to choose their own ways of study, so it is quite easy for us to apply for study suspension.
Japanese students participate in various kinds of extracurricular (课外的) activities. They attend clubs from elementary schools, so many students have already been accustomed to clubs when they enter university.
Our university now has 42 art clubs and 45 sports clubs. The annual University Festival is the grandest carnival (狂欢节) of Japanese universities. In the festival, students promote their clubs and organize various activities. Our university's festival attracted about 150,000 people last year. I really like this festival.
When we promote our clubs, we cook "tonnjiru", a kind of pork soup, and sell it to other students at the fair.
We also go to different places to interview celebrities (名人) who attend our festival as guests. It is a wonderful experience to talk to those stars face to face.
Japanese students like to hold parties. We have two kinds of parties. One is the Mochivori party. If you want to attend this party you have to cook something and take it to the party. The organizer buys drinks and snacks.
The other kind of party is the Nomikai, which mainly involves alcohol. We drink something called chu - hai, which is a combination of soda and wine. We also drink Japanese sake (日本米酒) and beer. There are parties for many occasions, like welcoming new students, celebrating victories and birthday parties or just for promoting friendship.

9、Gun Rights in the US
Immediately after the shooting at Virginia Tech University, Americans gathered to mourn (致哀) the dead. The president and the state governer both hurried there to share the grief. But the majority of Americans still cling to their right to ____ weapons.
Strictly speaking, the US is not the only country here gun violence has destroyed lives, families and communities in everyday circumstance. But the US is one of the few countries that seem unwilling and politically incapable of doing anything serious to stop it.
In countries like Britain and Canada, the government adopted strict gun control soon after serious gun violence incidents. US leaders, however, are held hostage by the gun lobby (院外活动集团) and the electoral (选举) system.
The powerful National Rifle Association, the major supporter of gun rights in the US, is too strong for any party to take on. Most Republicans oppose gun control anyway. Over the years, the Democrats have found that they can either campaign for gun control or win power, not both, they prefer power.
According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics, firearm (火器) incidents accounted for nine percent of the 4.7 million violent crimes in 2005. So although opinion polls show most Americans want stricter gun laws, many people don't want to give up their arms they keep to protect themselves.
Dave Hancock, a Virginia gun lover, is one example. In an interview he said, "If one professor in the Virginia incident had been carrying a legal weapon, they might have been able to stop all this. "In his opinion, the massacre (大屠杀) is an argument for more people to carry weapons, not fewer.
Americans' clinging to the right to bear arms is not just a fear of crime, but a mistrust of government, commented UK's Guardian newspaper.
One Virginia resident, who had a permit to carry a concealed (隐藏的) firearm, told the Guardian that it was every American's responsibility to have a gun.
"Each person," he said, "should not rely solely on the government for protection."
【单选题】

A.own

B.make

C.destroy

D.trade

10、Houses of the Future
What will houses be like after thirty years? No one really knows, but architects are trying to predict. What will our home be like then?
Future houses will have to be flexible. some of us will be working from home. So we will have to be able to use areas of the house for work for part of the day and for living for the rest. Families grow and change with children arriving, growing up and leaving home. The house of the future will have to grow and change with the family. Nothing will be as fixed as it is now. The house will always be changing to meet changing needs.
Everyone agrees that after 30 years we will be living in "intelligent" houses. We will be able to talk to our kitchen machines and discuss with them what to do. Like this: "We'll be having a party this weekend. What food shall we cook?" ____ We will be able to leave cooking to the machines, just tasting things from time to time to check.
The house of the future will be personal and each house will be different. You will be able to change the color of the wall easily. You won't have to paint them and you'll be able to tell the wall to change the color! And if you don't like the color today, you will be able to have a new one. The only thing you won't be able to do is move the house somewhere else!
【单选题】

A.You will be able to change the color of the wall easily.

B.The only thing you won't be able to do is move the house somewhere else!

C.And the machine will tell us what food we will have to buy and how to cook it.

D.What will our home be like then?

E.The house of the future will have to grow and change with the family.

F.The kids might take their bedrooms with them as they leave.
