2、Looking to the FutureWhen a magazine forhigh-school students asked its readers what life would be like in twenty years, they said: Machines would be run by solar power. Buildings would rotate so they could follow the sun to take maximum advantage of its light and heat. Walls would "radiate light" and "change colorwith the push of a buttons." Food would be replaced by pills. School would be taught "by electrical impulse while we sleep." Cars would have radar. Does this sound like the year 2000? Actually, the article was written in 1958 and the question was, "what will life be like in 1978?". The future is much too important to simply guess about, the way the high school students did. So experts are regularly asked to predict accurately. By carefully studying the present, skilled businessmen, scientists, and politicians are supposedly able to figure out in advance what will happen. But can they? One expert on cities wrote: Cities of the future would not be crowded but would have space forfarms and fields. People would travel to world in "airbuses" all-weather helicopters carrying up to 200 passengers. When a person left the airbus station he could drive a coin-operated car equipped with radar. The radar equipment of cars would make traffic accidents "almost unheard off\'. Does that sound familiar? If the exert had been accurate it would, because he was writing in 1957. His subject was "The city of 1982". If the professionals sometimes sound like high-school students, it\'s probably because future study is still a new field. Here is an example forfuture study. Economic forecasting, orpredicting what the economy will do, has been around fora long time. But there have been some big mistakes in this field, too. ______ In October of that year, the stock market had its worst losses ever, ruining thousands of investors who had put their faith in financial foreseers. One forecaster knew that predictions about the future would always be subject to significant errors. In 1957, H. J. Rand of the Rand Corporation was asked about the year 2000, "Only one thing is certain," he answered. " Children born today will have reached the age of 43."【单选题】

A.In early 1929, most forecasters saw an excellent future forthe stock market.

B.Children born today will have reached the age of 43.

C.Actually, the article was written in 1958 and the question was, "what will life be like in 1978?"

D.So experts are regularly asked to predict accurately.

E.Scientists are 80 percent accurate in predicting the future.

F.The radar equipment of cars would make traffic accidents "almost unheard off\'.

正确答案:A

答案解析:本题前面是主题句:But there have been some big mistakes in this field, too。主题句后面的句子应该是扩展句,点出big mistakes的内容或举例说明big mistakes。选项A就是big nustakes的一个例子。本题后面的句子说许多股票大跌,投资者破产,证明了预测的错误。所以选项A是正确的。

3、Easy ListeningStudents should be jealous. Not only do babies get to doze their days away, but they\'ve also mastered the fine art of learning in their sleep. By the time babies are one year old, they can recognize a lot of sounds and even simple words. Marie Cheour at the University of Turku in Finland suspected that they might progress this fast because they learn language while they sleep as well as when they are awake. To test the theory, Cheour and their colleagues studied 45 newborn babies in the first days of their lives. They exposed all the infants to an hour of Finnish vowel sounds one that sounds like "oo"; another like "ee" and the third boundary vowel peculiar to Finnish and similar languages that sounds like something in between. EEG (脑电图) recording of the infants brains before and after the session showed that the newborns could not distinguish the sounds. Fifteen of the babies then went back with their mothers, where the rest were split into two sleep-study groups. Onegroupwas exposed throughout their night-time sleeping hours to the same three vowels, while the others listened to the other, easier-to-distinguish vowel sounds. When tested in the morning, and again in the evening, the babies who\'d heard the tricky boundary vowels all night showed brainwave activity indicating that they could now recognize this sound. They could identify the sound even when its pitch was changed, while none of the other babies could pick up the boundary vowel at all. Cheour doesn\'t know how babies accomplish this nighttime learning, but she suspects that the special ability might indicate that unlike adults, babies don\'t "turn off" their cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) while they sleep: The skill probably fades in the course of the first years of life, she adds so forget the idea that you can pick up the tricky French vowels as an adult just by slipping a language tape under your pillow. But while it may not help grown-ups, Cheour is hoping to use the sleeping hours to give remedial help to babies who are genetically at risk of language disorders. If an adult wants to learn a language faster, he can put a language tape under his pillow. 【单选题】

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Notmentioned

正确答案:B

答案解析:这个命题是错误的。文章最后一段有“The skill probably fades in the course of the first years of life, she adds so forget the idea that you can pick up the tricky French vowels as an adult just by slipping a language tape under your pillow. But while it may not help grown-ups”,这些话都是对本题的否定。
