1、Arctic MeltEarth\'s North and South Poles are famous forbeing cold and icy. Last year, however, the amount of ice in the Arctic Ocean fell to a record low. Normally, ice builds in Arctic waters around the North Pole each winter and shrinks during the summer. But formany years, the amount of ice left by the end of summer has been declining. Since 1979, each decade has seen an 11. 4 percent drepin end of summer ice cover. Between 1981 and 2000, ice in the Arctic lost 22 percent of its thickness, becoming 1.13 meters thinner. Last summer, Arctic sea ice reached its skimpiest levels yet. By the end of summer 2007, the ice had shrunk to cover just 4.2 million square kilometers. That\'s 38 percent less area than the average cover at that time of year. and it\'s a very large 23 percent below the previous record low, which was setjust 2 years ago. This continuing trend has scientists concerned. There may be several reasons forthe ice melt, says Jinlun Zhang, an oceanographer at the University of Washington at Seattle. Unusually strong winds blew through the Arctic last summer. The winds pushed much of the ice out of the central Arctic, leaving a large area of thin ice and open water. Scientists also suspect that fewer clouds cover the Arctic now than in the past. Clearer skies allow more sunlight to reach the ocean. The extra heat warms both the water and the atmosphere. In parts of the Arctic Ocean last year, surface temperatures were 3.5℃ warmer than average and 1.5℃ warmer than the previous record high. With both air and water getting warmer, the ice is melting from both above and below. In some parts of the Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska and western Canada, ice that measured 3. 3 meters thick at the beginning of the summer measured just 50 centimeters by season\'s end. The new measurements suggest that melting is far more severe than scientists have seen by just looking at ice cover from above, says Donald K. Perovich, a geophysicist at the U. S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, N. H. Some scientists fear that the Arctic is stuck in a warming trend from which it may never recover. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word "build" in the first sentence of the second paragraph?【单选题】
A.construct
B.extend
C.create
D.expand
正确答案:D
答案解析:本句意思为“每年冬天北极附近的北冰洋开始结冰”,build为“结冰”的意思,expand有“容积扩张”的意思,所以与build相符;而construct为“修筑、建筑”的意思,所以不能选。
2、The Value of AdvertisementMoney spent on advertising is worth spending. It serves directly to bring about a rapid sale of goods at reasonable prices, so setting up a firm home market and making it possible to provide forexport at good price. By drawing attention to new ideas it helps greatly to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it causes an increased need forlabor, and is therefore a nice way to fight unemployment. It lowers the costs of many services: without advertisements your daily newspaper would cost four times as much, the price of your television program would need to be doubled, and travel by bus orsubway would cost more. and perhaps most important of all, advertising provides a promise of reasonable value in the products and services you buy. Besides the fact that twenty-seven Acts of Parliament govern the terms of advertising, no regular advertiser dare produce anything that fails to live up to the promise of his advertisements. He might fool some people fora little while through misleading advertising. He will not do so forlong, forthe public has the good sense not to buy the poorgoods more than once. If you see a product frequently advertised, it is the proof I know that the product does what is promised forit, and that it has good value. Advertising does more forthe good of the public than any other force I can think of. There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television person declare that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He was telling us the real difference. Of course advertising tries to persuade. If its messages were nothing but information, that would be difficult to get more people to buy, foreven the choice of the colorof a shirt is a bit persuasive-advertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. But perhaps that is what the well-known television person wants. What is the meaning of "touch on" in Paragraph 4?【单选题】
A.Feel slightly.
B.Strike gently.
C.Write quickly.
D.Mention briefly.
正确答案:D
答案解析:前3段讲了广告好处,第4段提到了广告的说服作用和告知作用,但仅是提到而已没有展开讲解,因此选D。
3、A special educationVideodisc holds great promise of helping to meet the needs of American schoolchildren who have problems seeing, hearing, speaking, orsocializing. Almost eleven percent of the students aged 3-21 in this country have an impairment that affects their ability to benefit from a regular education program. Handicapped students require special education because they are often markedly different from most children in one ormore of the following ways: mentally retarded (发展迟缓的) learning-disabled, emotionally disturbed, deaf, visually handicapped, physically handicapped, orother health impairments. The education of these handicapped children is rewarding but challenging. A special education student usually needs a longer period of time to acquire information. Repetitive teaching techniques are often beneficial, and indefatigable (孜孜不倦) consistency on the part of the teacher is frequently necessary. Interactive videodisc courseware has characteristics that can be capitalized upon to meet the challenges that special education poses. A videodisc program is infinitely patient. Repetition of any videodisc lesson can continue endlessly, and designers can assure absolute consistency within a program. Most important, according to special educatorWilliam Healey of the University of Arizona, is that videodisc "adds an extra dimension of realism forchildren who need graphic representations."Healey explained that deaf and mentally retarded children especially have difficulty grasping figurative language and higher-orcerlanguage concepts. He believes that forspecial education, the power of videodisc lies in the ability of the technology to visually represent language concepts normally taken forgranted by non-handicapped persons. Complex figurative language forms such as idioms and metaphors come most readily to mind as being difficult forhandicapped learners. A videodisc courseware is beneficial to those who have study difficulties because______【单选题】
A.its fancy design is very attractive
B.it allows the user to go back to where he wants to restudy
C.the content of it is healthy and promising
D.it is developed by university professors
4、Seeing Red Means Danger AheadThe colorred often means danger and by paying attention, accidents can be prevented. In the future, the colorred also may help prevent danger at construction sites. Thanks to new work by engineers, bridge supports orother kinds of materials, could one day contain a color- changing material. It will turn red before a structure collapses orfalls apart. The secret behind the color- changing material is a particular type of molecule (分子). A molecule is agroupof atoms (原子) held together by chemical bonds. Molecules come in all shapes and sizes and make up everything you can see, touch orfeel. How a molecule behaves depends on what kinds of atoms it contains and how they\'re held together. When a polymer (聚合物) containing a color- changing molecule called a mechanophore (机械响应性聚合物) is about to break, it produces a color. When a polymer with mechanophore molecules becomes "injured" orweak, one of the mechanophore bonds _____ and the material turns red. "It\'s a really simple detection method," says Nancy Sottos, one of the scientists who worked on the project. Sottos and her team tested the color- changing polymers in their lab. The test results proved encouraging. There is a way to get rid of the red colorlight. When a bright light is shone on the mechanophore, the broken bond is fixed and the red colordisappears. Thus "self - healing" may be a problem forengineers. They need to use the color- changer in big construction projects that will be outside, under sunlight. and sunlight will make the mechanophore\'s warning system useless.Sottos and her fellow scientists still have a lot of work to do before the color- changing molecules can be used outside the lab.【单选题】

B.breaks
C.increases
D.burns
正确答案:B
答案解析:本题有一定难度,关键在理解好文章上下文意义,文章此处要表达的是“断开”的意思,答案是B。
