1、Indian\'s NamesEach Indian was supposed to keep his birth name until he was old enough to earn one forhimself. But his playmates would always give him a name of their own. No matter what his parents called him, his childhood friends would use the name they had chosen. Often it was not pleasing, such as Bow Legs orBad Boy. But sometimes a name fit so well that the youngster found it difficult to shake it off. If he could not earn a better one from a war later, he could be stuck with a name like Bow Legs forthe rest of his life. The Indian earned his real name when he was old enough forhis first fight against the enemy. His life name depended on how he acted during this first battle. When he returned from the war, the whole tribe would gather and observe the ceremony in which he would be given his name by the chief. If he had done well, he would get a good name. Otherwise he might be called Crazy Wolf orMan-Afraid-of-a Horse. So an Indian\'s name told his record ordescribed the kind of man he was.A man was given many chances to improve his name, however, if in a later battle he was brave in fighting against the enemy, he was given a better name. Some of our great fighters had as many as twelve names, all good and each better than the last.An Indian\'s names belonged to him forthe rest of his life. No one else could use them. Even he himself could not give them away because names were assigned by the tribe, not the family. So no man could pass on his name unless the chief and the tribe asked him to do so.Sometimes an Indian would be asked to give his name to a son who had performed a noticeable deed. I know of only three orfour times when this happened. It is the rarest honorfora person -the honorof assuming his father\'s name. What was the greatest honoran Indian could earn?【单选题】
A.A victory in his first battle against the enemy.
B.A name given by the chief.
C.A ceremony to get his real name.
D.The right to use his father\'s name.
正确答案:D
答案解析:文章最后一句the rarest honorfora person就是承袭父亲的名字,因此选D。
2、Electric BackpackBackpacks are convenient. They can hold your books, your lunch, and a change of clothes, leaving your hands free to do other things. Someday, if you don\'t mind carrying a heavy load, your backpacks might also power your MP3 player, keep your cell phone running, and maybe even light your way home.Lawrence C. Rome and his colleagues from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass, have invented a backpack that makes electricity from energy produced while its wearer walks. In military actions, search-and-rescue operations, and scientific field studies, people rely increasingly on cell phones, global positioning system (GPS) receivers, night-vision goggles, and other battery-powered devices to get around and do their work. The backpack\'s electricity-generating feature could dramatically reduce the amount of a wearer\'s load now devoted to spare batteries, report Rome and his colleagues in the Sept. 9, Science. The backpack\'s electricity-creating powers depend on springs used to hang a cloth pack from its metal frame. The frame sits against the wearer\'s back, and the whole pack moves up and down as the person walks. A gear mechanism converts vertical movements of the pack to rotary motions of an electrical generator, producing up to 7. 4 watts.Unexpectedly, tests showed that wearers of the new backpack altertheir gaits in response to the pack\'s oscillations, so that they carry loads more comfortably and with less effort than they do ordinary backpacks. Because of that surprising advantage, Rome plans to commercialize both electric and non-electric versions of the backpack. The backpack could be especially useful forsoldiers, scientists, mountaineers, and emergency workers who typically carry heavy backpacks. Forthe rest of us, power-generating backpacks could make it possible to walk, play video games, watch TV, and listen to music, all at the same time. Electricity-generating packs aren\'t on the market yet, but if you do get one eventually, just make sure to look both ways before crossing the street! What is the most important feature of the backpack invented by Lawrence C. Rome and his colleagues?【单选题】
A.It produces electricity forelectronic devices while the wearer walks.
B.It can be used as cell phones, GPS in the military actions orfield studies.
C.It is small and convenient.
D.It is light and easy to carry.
正确答案:A
答案解析:第2段的第1句说,Lawrence C. Rome及其同事们发明的这种背包,当背着背包走路时,会有电能产生。该段最后一句告诉我们,背包的这种性能可减少背包的重量,因为不必携带备用电池。
3、Human Space ExplorationWhile scientists are searching the cause of the Columbia disaster, NASA is moving ahead with plans to develop a new craft that would replace shuttles(航天飞机) on space station missions by2012 and respond quickly to space station emergencies. The space agency released the first setof mission needs and requirements several days ago forme orbital space plane (轨道航天飞机), which would be designed to transport a crew of four to and from the International Space Station.Although it includes few specifics, the plan states the orbiter(轨道航天飞机) will be safer cheaper and require less preparation time than the shuttle. It would be able to transport four crew members by 2012 though it would be available forrescue missions by 2010. NASA says the craft should be able to transport injured orill space station crew members to "definitive(决定性的) medical care" within 24 hours. The release of the requirements showed NASA remains focused on the long-term priorities of space exploration, even as questions exist concerning the loss of Columbia and its seven member crew on February l, 2003.Expels at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, have been working foryears on a successorto the shuttle. The project, known as the Space Launch Initiative (倡议), was divided last year into two parts----one focusing on a future launch vehicle, the other on a space station orbiter. The orbiter is expected to be ready sooner. The program\'s managers say NASA officials have told them not to alterSpace Launch Initiative in light of the Columbia disaster.U. S. President George W. Bush asked Congress forabout US$1 billion forSpace Launch Initiative in 2004, funds that would be almost equally split between the Orbital Space Plane and Next Generation Launch Technology. The design of the orbiter indicates ____ .【单选题】
A.NASA\'s determination to continue space exploration
B.NASA\'s disadvantage in space technology
C.the great pressure from Congress on NASA
D.a heavy defeat forNASA
正确答案:A
答案解析:此题问的是设计这架航天飞机表明了什么?选项A的意思是“NASA继续探索太空的决心”。其他几个选项的意思均与原文不符,所以A为答案。

5、Pronouncing a LanguagePronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language; but few people are even fairly proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons forthis, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the basic reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages very much better than they do native language is that they fail to understand the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill----one that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be gained by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while realizing the importance of a good accent, often neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson time to this, and get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects of English, such as grammar orspelling, are allowed forthe moment to take second place.Besides this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements forthe teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique. It is also possible to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any comments he may make on his students\' pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time wasted. What are the three important requirements forteachers in teaching?【单选题】
A.Attention, information, technique.
B.Time, knowledge, attention.
C.Time, knowledge, technique.
D.Information, technique, a clear mental picture.
正确答案:C
答案解析:第2段的意思是除了留出时间练习发音外,还有两个要求:其一是知识,其二是技巧,因此答案是C。
