1、LanguageWhen one looks back upon the fifteen hundred years that are the life span of the English language, he should be able to notice a number of significant truths. The history of language is a history of constant change-at times a slow, almost imperceptible change, at other times a violent collision between two languages. Language a living growing organism, it has never been static. Another significant truth that emerges from such a study is that language at all times has been the possession not of one class orgroupbut of many. At one extreme it has been the property of the common, ignorant folk, who have used it in the daily business of their living, much as they have used their animals orthe kitchen pots and pans. At the other extreme it has been the treasure of those who have respected it as an instrument and a sign of civilization, and who have struggled by writing it down to give it some permanence, order, dignity, and if possible, a little beauty. As we consider our changing language, we should note here two developments that are of special and immediate importance to us. One is that since the time of the Anglo-Saxons there has been an almost complete reversal of the different relationship of words in a sentence. Anglo-Saxon(old English) was a language of many inflections. Modern English has few inflections. We must now depend largely on word orcerand function words to convey the meanings that the older language did by means of changes in the forms of words. Function words, you should understand, are words such as prepositions, conjunctions, and a few others that are used primarily to show relationships among other words. A few inflections, however, have survived. and when some word inflections come into conflict with word order,. there may be trouble forthe users of the language, as we shall see later when we turn our attention to such maters as WHO orWHOM and ME orl. The second fact we must consider is that as language itself changes, our attitudes toward language forms change also. The eighteenth century, forexample, produced from various sources a tendency to fix the language into patterns not always setin and grew, until at the present time there is a strong tendency to restudy and re-evaluate language practices in terms of the ways in which people speak and write. The authorof these paragraphs is probably a (an) ____.【单选题】

3、Britain\'s Solo SailorEllen MacArthur started sailing when she was eight, going out on sailing trips with her aunt. When she was 18, she sailed alone around Britain and won the "Young Sailorof the Year" award.Ellen became famous in 2001. Aged only 24, she was one of the only two women who entered the Vendee Globe round the world solo race, which lasts 100 days. Despite of many problems, she came the second in the race out of 24 competitors and she was given a very warm welcome when she returned.Ambition and determination have always been a big part of Ellen\'s personality. When she was younger, she lived in a kind of hut (棚屋) forthree years while she was trying to get sponsorship to compete in a transatlantic race. Then she took a one - way ticket to France, bought a tiny seven meter Class Mini yacht (游艇), slept under it while she was repairing it, and then she raced it 4,000 kilometres across the Atlantic in 1997, alone for33 days.Ellen has to learn many things, because sailing single - handed means that she has to be her own captain, electrician, sailmaker, engineer, doctor, journalist, cameraman and cooker, She also has to be very fit, and because of the dangers of sleeping forlong periods of time she\'s in the middle of the ocean, she has trained herself to sleep forabout 20 minutes at a time.and she needs courage. It took her many hours to make the repairs, Ellen says: "I was exhausted when came down. It\'s hard to describe how it feels to be up there. It\'s like trying to hold onto a big pole, which forme is just too big to get my arms around, with someone kicking you all the time and trying to shake you off".But in her diary, Ellen also describes moments which is worthwhile (值得的) :"A beautiful sunrise started the day, with black clouds slowly lit by the bright yellow sun. I have a very strong feeling of pleasure, being out here on the ocean and having the chance to live this. I just feel lucky to be here."In the Vendee Globe race, Ellen won ____.【单选题】

4、Three Ways to Become More CreativeMost people believe they don\'t have much imagination. They are wrong. Everyone has imagination, but most of us, once we become adults, forget how to access it. Creativity isn\'t always connected with great works of art orideas. People at work and in their free time routinely think of creative ways to solve problems. Maybe you have a goal to achieve, a tricky question to answer oryou just want to expand your mind! There are three techniques to help you. This technique involves taking unrelated ideas and trying to find links between them. First, think about the problem you have to solve orthe job you need to do. Then find an image, word, idea orobject, forexample, a candle. Write down all the ideas/words associated with candles, light, fire, matches, wax, night, silence, etc. Think of as many as you can. The next stage is to relate the ideas to the job you have to do. So imagine you want to buy a friend an original present; you could buy him tickets to a match ortake him out forthe night. Imagine that normal limitations don\'t exist. You have as much time/space/money, etc. as you want. Think about your goal and the new possibilities. If, forexample, your goal is to learn to ski (滑雪), you can now practice skiing every day of your life (because you have the time and the money). Now adapt this to reality. Maybe you can practice skiing every day in December, orevery Monday in January.Look at the situation from a different point of view. Good negotiators (谈判者) use this technique in business, and so do writers. Fiction writers often imagine they are the characters in their books. They ask questions: what does this character want? Why can\'t she get it? What changes must she make to get what she wants? What does she dream about? If your goal involves other people, put yourself "in their shoes". The best fishermen think they are the fish!According to the first technique, if you need to solve a problem ____.【单选题】

A.you could find an image and try to link it with the problem

B.you should link it with candles

C.you have to think of buying a present fora friend

D.you should link it with as many words as possible

正确答案:D

答案解析:本题难度不大,不要先看选项,抓住题干的提示词the first technique回到文章定位,答案依据在文章第二段,核心依据是这一句:Think of as many as you can。可以看出,最佳答案是D。

5、The Beginning of American LiteratureAmerican has always been a land of beginnings. After Europeans "discovered" America in the fifteenth century, the mysterious New World became formany people a genuine hope of a new life, an escape from poverty and persecution, a chance to start again. We can say that, as nation, America begins with that hope. When, however, does American literature begin?American literature begins with American experiences. Long before the first colonists arrived, before Christopher Columbus, before the Northmen who "found" America about the year 1,000, Native Americans lived here. Each tribe\'s literature was tightly woven into the fabric of daily life and reflected the unmistakably American experience of lining with the land. Another kind of experience, one filled with fear and excitement, found its expression in the reports that Columbus and other explorers sent home in Spain, French and English. In addition, the journals of the people who lived and died in the New England wilderness tell unforgettable tales of hard and sometimes heartbreaking experiences of those early years.Experience, then, is the key to early American literature. The New World provided a great variety of experiences, and these experiences demanded a wide variety of expressions by an even wider variety of early American writers. These writers included John Smith, who spent only two-and-a-half years on the American continent. They included Jonathan Edwards and William Byrd, who thought of themselves as British subjects, never suspecting a revolution that would create a United States of America with a literature of its own. American Indians, explorers, Puritan ministers, frontier wives, plantation owner-they are all the creators of the first American literature. When did American literature begin?【单选题】

A.Before the American natives lived there.

B.When Columbus and other explorers sent reports back home

C.When the Northmen found America in about 1,000.

D.Long before the year 1,000.

正确答案:D

答案解析:答案在第2段的第2句,早在1000年前北欧人声称发现了美洲大陆之前,这块土地上就有美洲印第安人居住,美洲文学早在那时就已经产生。
