1、The Threat to KiribatiThe people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their country will disappear from the face of the earth-literally. Several times this year, the Pacific island nation has been flooded by a sudden high tide. These tides, which swept across the island and destroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain. "This never happened before," say the older citizens of Kiribati. What is causing these mysterious high tides? The answer may well be global warming. When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants (污染物) are released. These pollutants trap heat in the earth\'s atmosphere. Warmer temperatures cause water to expand and also create more water by melting glaciers (冰川) and polar (极地的) ice caps.If the trend continues, scientists say, many countries will suffer, Bangladesh, for example, might lose one-fifth of its land. The coral (珊瑚) island nations of the Pacific, like Kiribati and the Marshall Islands, however, would face an even worse fate-they would be swallowed by the sea. The loss of these coral islands would be everyone\'s loss. Coral formations are home to more species than any other place on earth. The people of these nations feel frustrated. The sea, on which their economies have always been based, is suddenly threatening their existence. They don\'t have the money for expensive technological solutions like seawalls. And they have no control over the pollutants, which are being released mainly by activities in large industrialized countries. All they can do is to hope that industrialized countries will take steps to reduce pollution.High tides used to attack Kiribati when there was strong wind or heavy rain.【单选题】

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Not mentioned

正确答案:A

答案解析:题干大意:当风强雨大的时候,高潮经常袭击基里巴斯。文章第一段最后两句提到:These tides, which swept across the island and destroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain. "This never happened before," say the older citizens of Kiribati. 当无风无雨的时候这些高潮来横扫岛屿和破坏房屋,一位老人说:“这在以前从来都没有发生过”。意思就是说现在无风无雨也会出现高潮,而在过去只有大风大雨的时候才会出现高潮。故答案选A。

2、Keeping Cut Flowers1 While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people know how to keep them for as long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple fact. 2 An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensitive to temperature. For example, studies have shown that cut carnations (康乃馨) retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12℃ than when kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowers at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care. 3 Flowers are not intended by nature to live very long. Their biological purpose is simply to attract birds or insects, such as bees, for pollination (粉). After that, they quickly dry up and die. The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, called respiration, generates the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and color. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all giving things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies. 4 How, then, to control the rate at which flowers die? By controlling respiration. How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature. We know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse is also true. Thus by maintaining low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly. 5 Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to "drink" water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of these unwanted substances, household chlorine bleach (含氯漂白剂) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach (at 4% solution) be added to each liter of water. The water and solution should also be replaced each day. Paragraph 4____【单选题】

A.Control of Respiration

B.Beauty of Fresh Cut Flowers

C.Role of Respiration

D.Most Important Aspect of Flower Care

E.Need for Clean Water

F.Ways of Stopping Respiration

3、Sharing SilenceDeaf teenagers Orlando Chavez and German Resendiz have been friends since kindergarten (幼儿园). Together the two boys, who go to Escondido High School in California, have had the difficult job of learning in schools where the majority of the students can speak and hear.Orlando lost his hearing at the age of one. German was born deaf, and his parents moved from Mexico to find a school where he could learn sign language. He met Orlando on their first day of kinder garten."We were in a special class with about 25 other deaf kids," German remembered. "Before then, I didn\'t know I was deaf and I was different.""Being young and deaf in regular classes was very hard," signs Orlando. "The other kids didn\'t understand us and we didn\'t understand them. But we\'ve all grown up together, and today, I\'m popular because I\'m deaf. Kids try to communicate with me."Some things are very difficult for the two boys. "We can\'t talk on the phone, so if we need help, we can\'t call an emergency service," German signs. "And we can\'t order food in a drive - thru."Despite of their difficulties, the two boys have found work putting food in bags at a local supermarket. They got their jobs through a "workability" program, designed for teenagers from local schools with different types of learning disabilities.German has worked in the supermarket since August, and Orlando started in November."The other people who work here nave been very nice to us," Orlando signs. "They even sign sometimes. At first, we were nervous, but we\'ve learned a lot and we\'re getting better."The opportunity to earn money has been exciting, both boys said. After high school, they hope to attend the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in New York.According to the passage, the difficulty for Orlando and German is that ______.【单选题】

A.they can\'t communicate with their classmates

B.they are not allowed to talk on the phone

C.they can\'t order food in a drive - thru

D.they are not supposed to use emergency services

正确答案:C

4、Will We Take Vacation in Spaces? When Mike Kelly first set out to build his own private space-ferry service, he figured his bread-and-butter business would be lofting (发射) satellites into high-Earth orbit. Now he thinks he may have figured wrong. "People were always asking me when they could go," says Kelly, who runs Kelly Space & Technology out of San Bemardino, California. "I realized that real market is in space tourism."According to preliminary market surveys, there are 10,000 would-be-space-tourists willing to spend $1 million each to visit the final frontier. Space Adventure in Arlington, Virginia, has taken more than 130 deposits for a two-hour, $98, 000 space tour tentatively and somewhat dubiously (可疑地) set to actor by 2005. Gene Meyers of the space Island Group says: "Space is the next exotic(风光奇特的) vacation spot. "This may all sound great, but there are a few hurdles (困难). Putting a simple satellite into orbit with no oxygen, life support or return trip necessary already costs an astronomical (天文数字) $ 22,OOO/kg. And that doesn\'t include the oust of insuring rich and possibly litigious passenger. John Pike of the Federation of American Scientists acerbically (尖刻地) suggests that the entire group of entrepreneurs trying to corner (垄断) the space-tourism market have between them "just enough money to blow up one rocket."The U. S. space agency has plenty of money but zero interest in mailing space less expensive for the little guys. So the little guys are racing to do what the government has failed to do: design a reusable launch system that is inexpensive, safe and reliable. Kelly Space\'s prototype looks like a plane that has sprouted rocket engines. Rotary Rocket in Redwood City, California, has a booster with rotors to make a helicopter-style return to Earth; Kistler Aero-space in Kirkland, Washington, is piecing together its versions from old Soviet engines, shuttle-style thermal protection tiles and an elaborate parachute system. The first passenger countdowns are still years away, but bureaucrats at the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington are already informally discussing flight regulations. After all, you can\'t be too prepared, for a trip to that galaxy far, far away. For those who are intent on joining the 100-mile high club, Hilton and Budget are plotting to build space hotels. Before the Russian spaceship Mir came down, some people were talking about using it as a low-rent space hotel to reduce the cost. If a space hotel is finally built in space, and if you are thinking of staying in it, you may want to check the Michelin ratings before booking yourself a suite. Some of the hurdles space tourism faces include a lack of oxygen and life support equipment. 【单选题】

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Notmentioned

正确答案:B

答案解析:文章第3段讲的是太空旅行所面临的困难,但是并没有提及缺乏氧气和维持生命的设备,而主要是花销太大,经费不足。

5、An Intelligent CarDriving needs sharp eyes, keen ears, quick brain, and coordination between hands and the brain. Many human drivers have all. these and can control a fast-moving car. But how does an intelligent car control itself ?There is a virtual driver in the smart car. This virtual driver has "eyes," "brains", "hands" and "feet", too. The mini-cameras on each side of the car are his "eyes," which observe the road and conditions ahead of it. They watch the traffic to the car\'s left and right. There is also a highly automatic driving system in the car. It is the built-in computer, which is the virtual driver\'s "brain". His "brain" calculates the speeds of other moving cars near it and analyzes their positions. Basing on this information, it chooses the right line for the intelligent cars, and gives instructions to the "hands" and "feets" to act accordingly. In this way, the virtual driver controls his car. What is the virtual driver\'s best advantage? He reacts rapidly. The mini-cameras are sending images continuously to the "brain". It completes the processing of the images within 100 milliseconds. However, the world\'s best driver at least needs one second to react. Besides, when he takes action, he needs one more second. The virtual driver is really wonderful. He can reduce the accident rate. considerably on expressway. In this case, can we let him have the wheel at any time and in any place? Experts ______ that we cannot do that just yet. His ability to recognize things is still limited. He can now only drive an intelligent car on expressways. 【单选题】

A.warn

B.suggest

C.invite

D.check

正确答案:A

答案解析:空白所在的句子说“专家……我们现在还不能这么做”,因此判断A(警告)是答案。

6、The orangutanAmong all the animals, the ape is most like human beings. Both people and apes have the similar brain structure, the similar nerve system, and the similar kind of blood. There are four kinds of apes: the chimpanzee (黑猩猩), the orangutan (猩猩), the gorilla (大猩猩), and the gibbon (长臂猿). They live in the deep forests and warm tropical regions of Africa and of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. All apes are covered with brown, reddish-brown, or black hair everywhere on their bodies except their faces, feet, and hands. Their hands each have four fingers and a thumb that helps them grip things the way our thumbs help us. But they also have a thumb on each foot instead of a big toe. Thus they can hold things with their feet also. Having short, weak legs, apes do not walk on the ground very much. However, their arms are very strong. This enables them to swing from branches and travel very quickly from tree to tree. These animals live in small family groups that move from place to place in search of vegetables and fruits. They also eat eggs, small animals, nuts, and insects. When they are tired, they build nests in the trees. But they rarely sleep there for more than a night or two. Then they move on to look for more food. There are some differences among the following three kids of apes. The gibbon is never more than three feet high and weight only about fourteen pounds. The gorilla grows to be six feet tall and weight up to 600 pounds. The orangutan is smaller than the gorilla. It stands three to five feet tall and weight up to 200 pounds. Chimpanzees are the smartest of all apes. They can be taught to sit at a table and eat, to dress themselves, and to do things that human children can do. The last paragraph tells us that____. 【单选题】

A.chimpanzees can do better than human children
