1、Geology and Heap(1)The importance of particular metals in the human diet has been realized within the past few decades, and the idea that geology might be related to health has been recognized for a number of elements such as iodine, zinc and selenium. For example, soils with low iodine contents produce crops, and animals deficient in iodine. A lack of iodine in the human diet leads to some serious diseases.(2)The ultimate source of metals within the human body is rocks, which weather into soil, gaining or losing some of their chemical constituents. The crops we eat selectively remove from the soil the elements that they require for growth. The water we drink contains trace elements leached from rock and soil. Thus the geology and geochemistry of the environment have effects on the chemistry and health of plants, animals and people.(3)So far there is no data to suggest that people living on metal-rich soils experience a potential health hazard. The levels of metals within naturally contaminated soils are generally not high enough to cause serious health problems. Living on metal-rich soils does not represent a health risk unless large quantities of soil are digested or metal-rich dust is inhaled. However, small children are particularly exposed to metal-rich topsoil in playgrounds and gardens. They are also the most likely ones to eat potentially dangerous metal-rich soil.(4)Heavy metals are persistent: they do not break down to other chemicals in the environment. Industrially polluted sites usually undergo intensive clean-up and rehabilitation because heavy metals are a health concern once they enter the food chain. Some trace metals are alleged to cause cancer and are also known to cause poisoning(5)In contrast, naturally contaminated soils have not been subject too risk assessment studies and rehabilitation measures, despite the fact that they frequently possess metal concentrations well above those of such polluted by humans and above environmental quality criteria.(6)There is a vital need to understand the potential risks and long-term health effects of living on naturally contaminated soils. Future environmental investigations of naturally polluted soils should concentrate on the potential pathways of metals into the food chain and human body. Geologists should be part of such studies as they can provide the essential background information on rock and soil chemistry as well as the chemical forms of heavy metal pollution.Paragraph 4 ______【单选题】
A.No Evidence to Indicate Bad of Naturally Contaminated Soil
B.Potential Hazards of Human Contaminated Soils
C.Research an Channels of Heavy Metals Getting into Human Food Chain
D.Geology and Health Problems
E.Rocks----the Ultimate Source of Soil Pollution
F.Long-term Health Effects on Children
正确答案:B
答案解析:第4段说,受到工业污染的土壤含有重金属,而重金属很稳定,不容易降解。因此某些微量重金属能使人致癌和中毒。
2、What Is the Coolest Gas in the Universe? What is the coldest air temperature ever recorded on the Earth? Where was this low temperature recorded? The coldest recorded temperature on Earth was -91℃ which occurred in Antarctica in 1983.We encounter an interesting situation when we discuss temperatures in space Temperatures in Earth orbit actually range from about +120℃ to -120℃. The temperature depends upon whether you are in direct sunlight or shade, Obviously, -120℃ is colder than our body can safely endure. Thank NASA science for well-designed space suits that protect astronauts from these temperature extremes. The space temperatures just discussed affect only our area of the solar system . Obviously, it is hotter closer to the Sun and colder as we travel away from the Sun. Astronomers estimate temperatures at Pluto are about -210℃. How cold is the lowest estimated temperature in the entire universe? Again, it depends upon your location. We are taught it is supposedly impossible to have a temperature below absolute zero, which is -273℃, at which atoms do not move. Two scientists, whose names are Cornell and Wieman, have successfully cooled down a gas temperature barely above absolute zero. They won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001 for their work not a discovery in this car.Why is the two scientists\' work so important to science? In the 1920s, Satyendra Nath Bose was studying an interesting theory about particles we now call photons. Bose had trouble convincing Other scientists to believe so he contacted Albert Einstein. Einstein\'s calculations helped him theorize would behave as Bose thought but only at very cold temperatures.Scientists have also discovered that ______ atoms can help them make the world\'s atomic clocks even more accurate. These clocks are so accurate today they would only lose one second every six million years! Such accuracy will help us travel in space because distance is velocity times time(d=vxt). With the long distances involved in space travel to know time as accurately as possible to get accurate distance.【单选题】
A.ultra-small
B.ultra-fast
C.ultra-hot
D.ultra-cold
3、The Race into SpaceAmerican millionaire Dennis Tito will always be famous. He was the first tourist in space. "I spent sixty years on Earth and eight days in space and from my viewpoint, it was two separate lives," Tito explained. He loved his time in space. "Being in space and looking back at earth is one of the most rewarding experiences a human being can have."This kind of experience isn\'t cheap. It cost $ 20 million. However, Tito achieved his dream, so he was happy. "For me it was a life dream. It was a dream that began when didn\'t have any money," he told reporters. On 30 April 2002, Mark Shuttleworth became the world\'s second space tourist. Shuttleworth is a South African businessman. At the age of twenty - eight, he also paid $ 20 million for the eight - day trip. Both Tito and Shuttleworth bought their tickets from a company called Space Adventures. The company has around 100 people already on their waiting list for flights into space. The spaceship to take them doesn\'t exist yet. Many of the customers are people who like adventure. They are the kind of people who also want to climb Mount Qomolangma. Other customers are people who love space. However, these people are worried. Because it’s so expensive, only very rich people can go into space. They want space travel to be available to more people. That day may soon be here. Inter Orbital Systems (IOS) plans to send up to four tourists a week into space. The tours will depart from an island in Tonga. The company promises a package that includes forty-five days of astronaut training in Russia and California, seven days in space, and a vacation in Tonga, for $2 million. However, space flight is still very dangerous. Bill Readdy is NASA\'s deputy assistant administrator for space flight. He says that the chances of dying are about 1 in 500. Because of this, it may take time before space tourism really takes off. You might be able to go up, but will you come down?Space Adventures already has a spaceship.【单选题】

6、Shopping at Second - hand Clothing StoresWhen 33 years old Pete Barth was in college, shopping at second - hand clothing stores was just something he did-"like changing the tires on his car." He looked at his budget and decided he could save a lot of money by shopping for clothes at thrift shops."Even new clothes are fairly disposable (用后即丢掉的) and wear out after a couple of years," Barth said. "In thrift shops, you can find some great stuff whose quality is better than new clothes."Since then, Barth, who works at a Goodwill thrift shop in the US state of Florida, has found that there are all kinds of reasons for shopping for second - hand clothing. Some people, like him, shop to save money. Some shop for a crazy - looking shirt. And some shop as a means of conserving energy and helping the environment.Pat Akins, an accountant at a Florida Salvation Army (SA) (救世军) thrift shop, said that, for her, shopping at thrift shops is a way to help the environment."When my daughter was little, we looked at it as recycling," Akins said: "Also, why pay 30 dollars for a new coat when you can get another one for a lot less?"Akins said that the SA has shops all over the US-"some as big as department stores". All of the clothes are donated (捐赠), and when they have a surplus (盈余), they\'ll have "stuff a bag" specials, where customers can fill a grocery sack with clothes for only 5 or 10 dollars.Julia Stocum, 22, points out, however, that the huge amount of second - hand clothing in the US is the result of American wastefulness."I\'d say that second - hand stores are the result of our wasteful, materialistic culture," said Slocum, who works for a pro - conservation organization, the center of a New American Dream. "Thrift shops prevent waste from going to landfills (垃圾填埋场), They give clothing a second life and provide cheaper clothing for those who can\'t afford to buy new ones and generate (创造) income for charities. They also provide a way for the wealthy and middle classes to shed (摆脱) the guilt for their level of consumption."The word "thrift" in paragraph 1 could be best replaced by【单选题】

8、J. K. RowlingLike that of her own character, Harry Potter, J. K. Rowling\'s life has the luster of a fairy tale. Divorced, living on public assistance in a tiny Edinburgh flat with her infant daughter, Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Sorcerer\'s Stone at a table in a cafe during her daughter\'s naps and it was Harry Potter that rescued her.Rowling remembers that she always wanted to write and that the first story she actually wrote down, when she was five or six, was a story about a rabbit called Rabbit. Many of her favorite memories center around enjoying the fantastic adventure stories. On a particularly long train ride from Manchester to London in the summer of 1990, the idea came to her of a boy who is a wizard and doesn\'t know it. He attends a school for wizardry -she could see him very plainly in her mind. _____ four hours later, many of the characters and the early stages of the plot were fully formed in her head. The story took further shape as she continued working on it in pubs and cafes over her lunch hours.Rowling was working as a French teacher when she heard that her book about the boy wizard had been accepted for publication. Harry Potter and the Philosopher\'s Stone was published in June1997 and achieved almost instant success. With the publication of the American edition, retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer\'s Stone, in 1998, Rowling\'s books continued to make publishing history. Harry Potter climbed to the top of all the bestseller lists for children\'s and adult books. In Britain a separate edition of the first book appeared with a more "adult" dust jacket so that grown-ups reading it on trains and subways would not have to hide their copy behind a newspaper.J. K. Rowling lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, with her daughter Jessica and continues to work on writing the seven-book story of Harry Potter. 【单选题】

9、Woman workThough some people have suggested that women should return to housework in order to leave more jobs for men, the idea has been rejected by both women and men in public opinion polls.Lately some union officials have suggested that too many women are employed in types of work more suitable for men and that women should step aside to make way for unemployed young men. They argue that women, especially women in their childbearing years, actually delay economic development and result in productivity, poor quality and inefficiency. To solve the problem, they suggested that working women stay at home while their husbands or brothers were given double wages. They argue that ____ these circumstances, families would remain their same level of income, and women could run the house and raise children much better,The suggestion, however , has been flatly rejected by 9 0ut of 10 people polled .Some other people have suggested another way called "phased employment" theory. The theory suggests that a woman worker take leave from her job when she is seven months pregnant and stay off the job until her baby reaches the age of 3. It suggested that women on leave receive 75 percent of their normal salary and be allowed to return to work after the three-year period. This will benefit children, women, their families and the society and it definitely seems to be more acceptable than the suggestion that women return to their homes forever.【单选题】
A.under
B.for
C.with
D.on
正确答案:A
答案解析:under the (these) circumstances为固定搭配,意为“在这种情况下”。其余三个介词不能构成固定词组。
