1、Electric BackpackBackpacks are convenient. They can hold your books, your lunch, and a change of clothes, leaving your hands free to do other things. Someday, if you don\'t mind carrying a heavy load, your backpacks might also power your MP3 player, keep your cell phone running, and maybe even light your way home.Lawrence C. Rome and his colleagues from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass, have invented a backpack that makes electricity from energy produced while its wearer walks. In military actions, search-and-rescue operations, and scientific field studies, people rely increasingly on cell phones, global positioning system (GPS) receivers, night-vision goggles, and other battery-powered devices to get around and do their work. The backpack\'s electricity-generating feature could dramatically reduce the amount of a wearer\'s load now devoted to spare batteries, report Rome and his colleagues in the Sept. 9, Science. The backpack\'s electricity-creating powers depend on springs used to hang a cloth pack from its metal frame. The frame sits against the wearer\'s back, and the whole pack moves up and down as the person walks. A gear mechanism converts vertical movements of the pack to rotary motions of an electrical generator, producing up to 7. 4 watts.Unexpectedly, tests showed that wearers of the new backpack alter their gaits in response to the pack\'s oscillations, so that they carry loads more comfortably and with less effort than they do ordinary backpacks. Because of that surprising advantage, Rome plans to commercialize both electric and non-electric versions of the backpack. The backpack could be especially useful for soldiers, scientists, mountaineers, and emergency workers who typically carry heavy backpacks. For the rest of us, power-generating backpacks could make it possible to walk, play video games, watch TV, and listen to music, all at the same time. Electricity-generating packs aren\'t on the market yet, but if you do get one eventually, just make sure to look both ways before crossing the street!Backpacks are convenient because .【单选题】
A.they can be very large
B.they can hold as many things as you want to carry
C.your hands are freed to do other things
D.you do not have to carry things with you
正确答案:C
答案解析:第1段告诉我们,因为背包可以装许多东西,所以可以将双手解放出来做其他事情(to free your hands to do other things).
2、Human Space ExplorationWhile scientists are searching the cause of the Columbia disaster, NASA is moving ahead with plans to develop a new craft that would replace shuttles(航天飞机) on space station missions by2012 and respond quickly to space station emergencies. The space agency released the first set of mission needs and requirements several days ago for me orbital space plane (轨道航天飞机), which would be designed to transport a crew of four to and from the International Space Station.Although it includes few specifics, the plan states the orbiter(轨道航天飞机) will be safer cheaper and require less preparation time than the shuttle. It would be able to transport four crew members by 2012 though it would be available for rescue missions by 2010. NASA says the craft should be able to transport injured or ill space station crew members to "definitive(决定性的) medical care" within 24 hours. The release of the requirements showed NASA remains focused on the long-term priorities of space exploration, even as questions exist concerning the loss of Columbia and its seven member crew on February l, 2003.Expels at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, have been working for years on a successor to the shuttle. The project, known as the Space Launch Initiative (倡议), was divided last year into two parts----one focusing on a future launch vehicle, the other on a space station orbiter. The orbiter is expected to be ready sooner. The program\'s managers say NASA officials have told them not to alter Space Launch Initiative in light of the Columbia disaster.U. S. President George W. Bush asked Congress for about US$1 billion for Space Launch Initiative in 2004, funds that would be almost equally split between the Orbital Space Plane and Next Generation Launch Technology.According to the passage, the l billion funds, if granted, would .【单选题】
A.be used to rebuild the International Space Station
B.be awarded to the scientists working at NASA
C.be shared by the two projects under the Space Launch Initiative
D.be spent on the investigation of the Columbia disaster
3、Status of Teachers in AmericaAt present, in many American cities especially, many teachers in the public schools say they are underpaid. They point to jobs such as secretary or truck driver, which often pay more to start than that of the teacher. In many other fields, such as law, medicine, computer science, a beginning worker may make more than a teacher who has taught for several year.Teaching has never been a profession that attracted people interested in high salaries. It is by history a profession that has provided rewards in addition to money, the satisfaction of sharing knowledge, of influencing others, of guiding young people. But in the past several years, there are more difficulties in teaching, for many, than there are rewards.Unruly students, who would have chosen teaching as their life career in the past, are going into other fields.Another reason for this change in teacher candidates is the changing status of women in the United States. Until the late 1960s and 1970s, one of the most popular choices for women was teaching. But as other professions, such as law and medicine opened up to women, women stopped pouring into teacher training programs. Thus, a major pool of excellent candidates for the teaching profession dwindled(减少).Bit by bit government officials and others realized that the status of the teacher had suffered. They talked about change. But change in a vast society like the United States is not easy. People\'s attitudes have formed over many years, and sometimes change takes many years. Why do school teachers turn to other professions?【单选题】
A.Because of the unruly students and large classes.
B.Because of the difficulties of teaching as well as a lack of money, support and understanding.
C.Because of the attracting power of other jobs.
D.Because of a lack of satisfaction \'of sharing knowledge and influencing others.
正确答案:B
答案解析:文中提出了两个主要原因:underpaid与more difficulty in teaching,因此选B。
4、A Carrot a Day Keeps Cancer AwayAmong all the malignancies, lung cancer is the biggest killer: more than 100,000 Americans a year die of the disease. Giving up smoking is one of obvious way to reduce the risk, but another answer may lie in the kitchen. According to a new report, even heavy smokers may be protected from developing lung cancer by a simple dietary measure: a daily portion of carrots, spinach or any other vegetable or fruit containing a form of vitamin A called carotene. The finding, published in the British medical journal The Lancet, is part of a long-range investigation of diet and disease. Since 1957 a team of American researchers has monitored the dietary habits and medical histories of 2,000 middle-aged men employed by the Western Electric Co. in Chicago. Led by Dr. Richard Shelelle of Chicago\'s Rush-Presbyterian, St. Luke\'s Medical Center, the researchers recently began to sort out the links between the subjects\' dietary patterns and cancer. Other studies of animals and humans have suggested that vitamin A offers some protection against lung cancer. The correlation seemed logical, since vitamin A is essential for the growth of the epithelial (上皮的) tissue that lines the airways of the lungs.Vegetables: But the earlier research did not distinguish between two different forms of the vitamin. "Preformed" vitamin A, known as retinol, is found mainly in liver and dairy products like milk, cheese, butter and eggs. But vitamin A is also made in the body from carotene, which is abundant in a variety of vegetables and fruits, including carrots, spinach, squash, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and apples. In the Western Electric study, Shekelle and his colleagues found little correlation between the incidence of lung cancer and the consumption of foods containing preformed vitamin A, but when they examined the data on carotene intake, they discovered a significant relationship. Among the488 men who had the lowest level of carotene consumption, there were fourteen cases of lung cancer, in a group of the same size that ate the most carotene, only two cases developed. The apparent protective effect of carotene held up even for longtime smokers but to a lesser degree.Further studies will be necessary before the link between lung cancer and carotene can be firmly established. In the meantime, researchers warn against taking large numbers of vitamin A pills, because the tablets contain a form of the chemical that can be extremely toxic in high doses. Instead, they advise a well-balance diet that includes foods rich in carotene. For a smoker, a half-cup of carrots every day might possibly make the difference between life and death.Where is carotene present?【单选题】
A.tomatoes
B.carrots
C.squash
D.all of the above
正确答案:D
答案解析:根据第3段,“维生素A在体内的产生源于胡萝卜素,胡萝卜素在蔬菜、水果中大量存在,包括胡萝卜、菠菜、西葫芦、西红柿和苹果”。因此答案是D。
