1、The carCars are an important part of life in the United States. Without a car most people feel that they are poor. and even if a person is poorhe doesn\'t feel really poorwhen he has a car. Henry Ford was the man who first started making cars in large numbers. He probably didn\'t know how much the car was going to affect American culture. The car made the United Stated a nation on wheels. and it helped make the United States what it is today. There are three main reasons why the car becomes so popular in the United States. First of all, the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form of transportation. With a car people can go anylace without spending a lot of money. The second reason cars are popular is the fact that the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form of public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the country as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently. The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don\'t like to wait fora bus, ora train oreven a plane. They don\'t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. and this is the freedom that Americans want most to have. The gas shortage has caused a big problem forAmericans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so much gas. "A nation on wheels" means that____. 【单选题】

A.the country is producing the best cars in the world

B.everyone in this country owns a car

C.cars play a very important role in people\' lives

D.there are more cars than trains in this country

正确答案:C

答案解析:原文“The car made the United Stated a nation on wheels”说明,在美国汽车很受欢迎,汽车对于美国人来说是非常重要的。

2、WaterThe second most important constituent (构成成份) of the biosphere (生物圈) is liquid water. This can only exist in a very narrow range of temperatures, since water freezes at 0℃ and boils at 100℃. Life as we know it would only be possible on the surface of a planet which had temperatures somewhere within this narrow range. The earth\'s supply of water probably remains fairly constant in quantity. The total quantity of water is not known very accurately, but it is about enough to cover the surface of the globe to a depth of about two and three - quarter kilometers. Most of it is in the form of the salt water of the oceans about 97 percent. The rest is fresh, but three -quarters of this is in the form of ice at the Poles and on mountains, and cannot be used by living systems until melted. Of the remaining fraction, which is somewhat less than one percent of the whole, there is 10 -20 times as much stored underground water as there is actually on the surface. There is also a tiny, but extremely important fraction of the water supply which is present as water vapour in the atmosphere.Water vapour in the atmosphere is the channel through which the whole water circulation (循环) of the biosphere has to pass. Water evaporated (蒸发) from the surface of the oceans, from lakes and rivers and from moist (潮湿的) earth is added to it. From it the water comes out again as rain orsnow, falling on either the sea orthe land. There is, as might be expected, a more intensive evaporation per unit area over the sea and oceans than over the land, but there is more rainfall over the land than over the oceans and the balance is restored by the runoff from the land in the form of rivers. The word "fraction" in the second paragraph means ______.【单选题】

A.a very small amount

B.a large area

C.an important system

D.a majorsource of information

正确答案:A

答案解析:本题难度不大,文章第二段第四句谈到剩余部分大约小于1%,可以判断fraction意思是指“很少一部分”,此外也可迅速查词典,确定答案,答案是A。

4、Keeping Cut Flowers1 While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people know how to keep them foras long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple fact. 2 An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensitive to temperature. Forexample, studies have shown that cut carnations (康乃馨) retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12℃ than when kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowers at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care. 3 Flowers are not intended by nature to live very long. Their biological purpose is simply to attract birds orinsects, such as bees, forpollination (粉). After that, they quickly dry up and die. The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, called respiration, generates the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and color. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all giving things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and forflowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies. 4 How, then, to control the rate at which flowers die? By controlling respiration. How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature. We know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse is also true. Thus by maintaining low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly. 5 Another vital factorin keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to "drink" water that is dirty orotherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of these unwanted substances, household chlorine bleach (含氯漂白剂) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach (at 4% solution) be added to each liter of water. The water and solution should also be replaced each day. Another important way to prolong the life of cut flowers is____. 【单选题】

A.by keeping its original shape and color

B.in the life ofthe cut flower

C.to produce carbon dioxide

D.foras long as possible

E.by controlling temperature

F.to replace the water and solution every day

正确答案:F

答案解析:只要找到全文的最后一句就能正确回答该题。选项F符合题意,故选F。

5、Strike in MTV NetworksScores of workers from MTV Networks walked off the job yesterday afternoon, filling the sidewalk outside the headquarters of its corporate parent, Viacom, to protest recent changes in benefits. The walkout highlighted the concerns of a category of workers who are sometimes called permalancers: permanent freelancers who work like full-time employees but do not receive the same benefits.Waving signs that read "Shame on Viacom", the workers, most of them in their 20s, demanded that MTV Networks reverse a plan to reduce health and dental benefits forfreelancers beginning Jan. 1. In a statement, MTV Networks noted that its benefits program forfull-time employees had also undergone changes, and it emphasized that the plan forfreelancers was still highly competitive within the industry. Many freelancers receive no corporate benefits. But some of the protesters asserted that corporations were competing to see which could provide the most mediocre health care coverage. Matthew Yonda, who works at Nickelodeon, held a sign that labeled the network "Sick-elodeon". "I\'ve worked here every day forthree years-I\'m not a freelancer," Mr. Yonda said. "They just call us freelancers in orcerto bar us from getting the same benefits as employees."The changes to the benefits package were announced last Tuesday. Freelancers were told that they would become eligible forbenefits after 160 days of work, beginning in January. While that eased previous eligibility rules, which required freelancers to work for52 weeks before becoming eligible, it would have required all freelancers not yet eligible forbenefits to start the waiting period over again on Jan. 1. The 401 (k) plan was also removed On Thursday, acknowledging the complaints, MTV Networks reinstated the 401 (k) plan and said freelancers who had worked consistently since March would be eligible.Fueled by a series of blog posts on the media web site Gawker-the first post was headlined "The Viacom Permalance Slave System" -a loose cohort of freelancers created protest stickers and distributed walkout fliers last week. Caroline O\'Hare, a unit manager who has worked forMTV formore than two years, said the new health care plan-with higher deductibles and a $ 2,000 cap on hospital expenses each year-had provoked outrage. "They think they can treat us like children that don\'t have families, mortgages ordreams of retirement," she said.Outside Viacom\'s headquarters, several workers held posters with the words, "There\'s too many of us to ignore." It was unclear how many freelancers are on the company\'s payroll; an MTV Networks spokeswoman said the figure was not known because it rises and falls throughout the year. The company has 5,500 full-time employees, excluding freelancers, around the world. Two freelancers and one full-time employee, who asked not to be identified forfear of retribution, estimated that the percentage of freelancers in some departments exceeded 75 percent. Another laboraction is expected to take place outside Viacom later this week. Members of the Writers Guild of America, who have been on strike forfive weeks, are expected to picket there on Thursday.According to the new benefits program of MTV Networks, the following freelancers are eligible forbenefits except ______.【单选题】

A.those who have worked for160 days

B.those who have worked for1 year

C.those who have worked since March

D.those who have worked since Jan. 1

6、Animal\'s "Sixth Sense"A tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean in December, 2004. It killed tens of thousands of people in Asia and East Africa, Wild animals, ______, seem to have escaped that terrible tsunami. This phenomenon adds weight to notions that they possess a "sixth sense" fordisasters, experts said.Sri Lankan Wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island\'s coast clearly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found."No elephants are dead, not even a dead rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening" H. D. Ratnayake, deputy directorof Sri Lanka\'s Wildlife Department, said about one month after the tsunami attack. The waves washed floodwaters up to 2 miles inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka\'s biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards."There has been a lot of scientific evidence about dogs barking orbirds migrating before volcanic eruptions orearthquakes. But it has not been proven," said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviorassistant at Johannesburg Zoo. "There have been no specialist studies because you can\'t really test it in a lab orfield setting," he told Reuters. Other authorities concurred with this assessmetn."Wildlife seem to be able to pick up certain phenmenon, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting impending disasters," said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell orhearing to avoid danger such as predators. The notion of an animal "sixth sense" -orsome other mythical power-is an enduring one which the evidence on Sri Lanka\'s ravaged coast is likely to add to. The Romans saw owls as omens of impending disaster and many ancient cultures viewed elephants as sacred animals endowed with special powers orattributes.【单选题】

7、The Value of AdvertisementMoney spent on advertising is worth spending. It serves directly to bring about a rapid sale of goods at reasonable prices, so setting up a firm home market and making it possible to provide forexport at good price. By drawing attention to new ideas it helps greatly to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it causes an increased need forlabor, and is therefore a nice way to fight unemployment. It lowers the costs of many services: without advertisements your daily newspaper would cost four times as much, the price of your television program would need to be doubled, and travel by bus orsubway would cost more. and perhaps most important of all, advertising provides a promise of reasonable value in the products and services you buy. Besides the fact that twenty-seven Acts of Parliament govern the terms of advertising, no regular advertiser dare produce anything that fails to live up to the promise of his advertisements. He might fool some people fora little while through misleading advertising. He will not do so forlong, forthe public has the good sense not to buy the poorgoods more than once. If you see a product frequently advertised, it is the proof I know that the product does what is promised forit, and that it has good value. Advertising does more forthe good of the public than any other force I can think of. There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television person declare that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He was telling us the real difference. Of course advertising tries to persuade. If its messages were nothing but information, that would be difficult to get more people to buy, foreven the choice of the colorof a shirt is a bit persuasive-advertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. But perhaps that is what the well-known television person wants. It seems to the writer that____.【单选题】

A.it is very difficult to get all the information from advertising

B.there is nothing wrong with advertising in persuading the buyers

C.advertising is usually very boring and misleading

D.people will pay attention to the colorof a shirt rather than advertising

正确答案:B

答案解析:根据最后一段,如果广告只有告知作用而没有说服作用,人们就不会注意,就不可能有购买欲望。因此选B。

8、Seeing Red Means Danger AheadThe colorred often means danger and by paying attention, accidents can be prevented. In the future, the colorred also may help prevent danger at construction sites. Thanks to new work by engineers, bridge supports orother kinds of materials, could one day contain a color- changing material. It will turn red before a structure collapses orfalls apart. The secret behind the color- changing material is a particular type of molecule (分子). A molecule is agroupof atoms (原子) held together by chemical bonds. Molecules come in all shapes and sizes and make up _____ you can see, touch orfeel. How a molecule behaves depends on what kinds of atoms it contains and how they\'re held together. When a polymer (聚合物) containing a color- changing molecule called a mechanophore (机械响应性聚合物) is about to break, it produces a color. When a polymer with mechanophore molecules becomes "injured" orweak, one of the mechanophore bonds breaks and the material turns red. "It\'s a really simple detection method," says Nancy Sottos, one of the scientists who worked on the project. Sottos and her team tested the color- changing polymers in their lab. The test results proved encouraging. There is a way to get rid of the red colorlight. When a bright light is shone on the mechanophore, the broken bond is fixed and the red colordisappears. Thus "self - healing" may be a problem forengineers. They need to use the color- changer in big construction projects that will be outside, under sunlight. and sunlight will make the mechanophore\'s warning system useless.Sottos and her fellow scientists still have a lot of work to do before the color- changing molecules can be used outside the lab.【单选题】

A.nothing

B.anyone

C.someone

D.everything

正确答案:D

答案解析:本题难度不大,考查不定代词everything的用法,本题可以先看选项,得到信息提示,很明显,答案是D。

9、AIDSAs a science writer, I don\'t have to wear emotional armorvery often. Before I went to Zimbabwe fora visit, I had talked to other reporters ______. All told me to get prepared forthe orphans, many of whom had caught the AIDS virus from their mothers and the strong desire to make everything all right forthem. Then again, nothing could have prepared me forthe visit to creche(育婴堂) forAIDS orphans in Harare, where one sick, smiling four-year-old boy tried to keep up with the other kids playing ring-around-the-rosy but was so weak he kept falling to the floor, ormeeting a 25-year-old unmarried girl who cared forher nephew Only when I got back about a week later The boy who called his aunt "Mama" was too weak even to take the piece of banana I offered. Meanwhile photojournalist Karin Retief was visiting a room at the hospice (济贫院) where she had been told a particularly sweet orphan boy stayed. At first she did not see anyone on the bed and was about to say he must be elsewhere, when suddenly she spotted his tiny arm in the air, his body lost in the folds of the bedclothes. Recently Karin wrote to me that she had been able to keep our assignment from taking too great an emotional suffering at the time. " Only when I got back about a week later, could I moum the people I met", she continued. "I sat in church and wanted to ask the priest to pray forthe people with AIDS in Zimbabwe and all over the world. Then all the people\'s faces, pain and suffering became so real, I could not get the words out. I broke down and cried and cried forthem". 【单选题】

D.even though her only income was from growing and selling a few vegetables at the local market

E.was so weak he kept falling to the floor

F.while we were visiting the orphans

正确答案:B

答案解析:此处要求一个定语从句,因此选B。

10、Rockets in the SkyIf someone asked you. "What coloris the sky?" I expect that you would answer, "Blue." I am afraid that you would be wrong. The sky has no color. When we see blue, we are looking at blue sunlight. The sunlight is shining on little bits of dust in the air. We know that there is air all around the world. We could not breathe without air. Airplanes could not fly without air. They need air to lift their wings. Airplanes cannot fly very high because as they go higher the air gets thinner. If we go far enough away from the earth, we find there is no air. What is the sky? The sky is space. In this space there is nothing except the sun, the moon and all the stars. Scientists have always wanted to know more about the other worlds in the space. They have looked at them through telescopes and in this way they have found out a great deal. The moon is about 384,000 kilometers away from the earth. An airplane cannot fly to the moon but there is a thing that can fly even when there is no air. This is rocket. I am sure that you are asking. "How does a rocket fly?" If you want to know, get a balloon and then blow it up until it is quite big. Do not tie up the neck of the balloon. Let go! The balloon will fly off through the air very quickly. The air inside the balloon tries to get out. It rushes out through neck of the ball off and this pushes the balloon through the air. It does not need wings like an air plane. This is how a rocket works. It is not made of rubber like a balloon, of course. It is made of metal. The metal must not be heavy but it must be very strong. There is gas inside the rocket which is made very hot. When it rushes out of the end of the rocket, the rocket is pushed up into the air. Rockets can fly far out into space. Rockets with men inside them have already reached the moon. Several rockets, without men inside them, have been sent to other worlds much farther away. One day rockets may be able to go anywhere in the space. A rocket is pushed up into the air when____. 【单选题】

A.hot gas rushes out of its head.

B.it is powered by gas.

C.hot gas rushes out of its bottom.

D.hot gas rushes out of its neck.

正确答案:C

答案解析:根据文章倒数第2段最后一句( When it rushes out of the end of the rocket)。
