2、An Early Form of Jazz MusicMusic comes in many forms; most countries have a style of their own. At the turn of the last century, ____ jazz was born, America had no prominent music 0f its own. No one knows exactly when was invented orby whom. But it began to be heard in the early 1890s. Jazz is America\'s contribution to popular music. In contrast to classical music, which follows formal European traditions, jazz is spontaneous and free in form. It bubbles with energy, expressing the moods, interests, and emotions of the people. In the 1920s\' jazz sounded like America. and so it does today. The origins 0f the music are as interesting as the music itself. American Negroes, orblacks, as they are called today, were the jazz pioneers. They were brought to the Southern states as slaves. They were sold to plantation owners and forced to work long hours. When a Negro died, his friends and relatives formed a procession to carry to body to the cemetery. In New Orleans, a band often accompanied the body . On the way to the cemetery the band played slow, solemn music, suited to the occasion. Furthermore 0n the way home the mood changed. Spirits lifted. Death had removed one of their numbers, but the living were glad to be alive . The band played happy music, improvising on both the harmony and the melody of the tunes played at the funeral. This music made everyone want to dance. It was an early form ofjazz. 【单选题】

A.while

B.when

C.since

D.as

正确答案:B

答案解析:when jazz was born是定语从句,修饰at the turn of the last century. 所以这里需要填入的是一个引导定语从句的关联副词,只有when具有这一功能。

3、Pronouncing a LanguagePronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language; but few people are even fairly proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons forthis, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the basic reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages very much better than they do native language is that they fail to understand the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill----one that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be gained by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while realizing the importance of a good accent, often neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson time to this, and get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects of English, such as grammar orspelling, are allowed forthe moment to take second place.Besides this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements forthe teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique. It is also possible to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any comments he may make on his students\' pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time wasted. What does the authorsay about pronouncing foreign language?【单选题】

A.Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing foreign languages.

B.It is difficult forpeople to pronounce foreign languages.

C.No one is really an expert in the skill of pronouncing foreign languages.

4、Migrant (移民的) WorkersIn the past twenty years, there has been an increasing tendency forworkers to move from one country to another. While some countries have restricted most jobs to local people, others have attracted and welcomed migrant workers. This is particularly the case in the Middle East, where increased oil incomes have enabled many countries to call in outsiders to improve local facilities. Thus the Middle East has attracted oil workers from the USA and Europe. It has brought in workers from many countries, including South Korea and Japan. In view of the difficult living and working conditions in the Middle East, it is not surprising that the pay is high to attract suitable workers. Many engineers and technicians can earn at least twice as much money in the Middle East as they can in their own country, and this is a majorattraction .Sometimes a disadvantage has a compensating (补偿的) advantage. Forexample, the ______ living conditions often lead to increased friendship when workers have to depend on each other forsafety and comfort. In a similar way, many migrant workers can save large sums of money partly because of the lack of entertainment facilities. The work is often complex and full of problems but this merely presents challenge to engineers who prefer to find solutions to problems rather than do routine work in their home country. One majorproblem which affects migrant workers in the Middle East is that their jobs are temporary ones. They are nearly always on contract, so it is not easy forthem to plan ahead with great confidence. This is to be expected since no country welcomes a large number of foreign workers as permanent residents. In any case, migrant workers accept this disadvantage, along with others, because of the considerable financial benefits which they receive.【单选题】
