2、The Process of AgeingAt the age of twelve years, the human body is at its most vigorous. It has yet to reach its full size and strength, and its owner his orher full intelligence; but at this age the likelihood of death is the least. Earlier, we were infants and young children, and consequently more vulnerable; later, we shall undergo a progressive loss of our vigorresistance which, though imperceptible (察觉不出的) at first, will finally become so steep that we can live no longer, however well we look after ourselves, and however well society, and our doctors, look after us ____. If we escape wars, accidents and diseases, we shall eventually "die of old age", and this happens at a rate which differs little from person to person. Some of us will die sooner, a few will live longer. But there is a virtual limiton how long we can hope to remain alive, however lucky and robust we are.Normal people tend to forget this process until they are reminded of it. We are so familiar with the fact that man ages, that people have foryears assumed that the process of losing vigorwith time was something self-evident, like the cooling of a hot kettle orthe wearing-out of a pair of shoes. "They have also assumed that all animals, and probably other organisms such as trees, oreven the universe itself, must in the nature of things "wear out". Most animals we commonly observe do in fact age as we do; and mechanical systems like a wound watch, orthe sun, do in fact run out of energy. But these are not analogous to what happens when man ages. A run-down watch is still a watch and can be rewound. and old watch, by contrast, becomes so worn and unreliable that it eventually is not worth mending. But a watch could never repair itself it does not consist of living parts, only of metal, which wears away by friction (摩擦). We could, at one time tune, repair ourselves well enough, at least to overcome all but the most instantly fatal illnesses and accidents. Between twelve and eighty years we gradually lose this power.an illness which at twelve would knock us over, at eighty can knock us out, and into our grave. If we could stay as vigorous as we are at twelve, it would take about 700 years forhalf of us to die, and another 700 of the survivors to be reduced by half again.【单选题】

A. Some old people are oppressed by the fear of death

B. an illness which at twelve would knock us over, at eighty can knock us out, and into our grave

C. and mechanical systems like a wound watch, orthe sun, do in fact run out of energy

D.This decline in vigorwith the passing of time is called ageing

E.and old watch, by contrast, becomes so worn and unreliable that it eventually is not worth mending

3、 Happiness If your sense of well-being fluctuates with stock market, you might be comforted to know that money can\'t buy you happiness anyway. In one American study conducted in 1993, level of income was shown to have an inverse relation to happiness: Thegroupwhose income had declined was happier overall than thegroupwhose income had increased. A soon-to-be published review of the hundreds of studies on this subject supports the 1993 findings. In developed countries, the correlation between income and happiness is close to zero and sometimes negative. With a correlation between level of income and happiness somewhere between 0.12 and 0.18, the United States is near the bottom of the list; that factors other than income are overwhelmingly more important in explaining happiness. Also, as our material wealth increases, the gap between income and satisfaction with life seems to be widening. Predictably, money has its most positive effect on the poor, but once a person has achieved a minimal standard of living level of income has almost nothing to do with happiness. Close relationship, rather than money, is the key to happiness. Indeed, the number of one\'s personal friends is a much better indicatorof overall satisfaction with life than personal wealth. One stands a better chance of achieving a satisfying life by spending time with friends and family than by striving forhigher income. Incidentally, in the US, as people become richer, the probability of divorce increases. Our need forcompanionship is partly biological. All primates respond with pleasure to demonstrations of affection and with pain to loss of companionship. Isolated monkeys will sacrifice food just forthe glimpses of another monkey. By ignoring our biologically programmed need foreach other, we risk physical and mental distress. A recent cross-national study of mental depression in the US found that in advanced countries, there is a rising tide of majordepression. Teenage suicides have increased in recent decades in almost all advanced countries. Moreover, in the US since World War Ⅱ, there has been an actual decline in the proportion of people who report themselves to be "very unhappy. " You can easily test the claim that companionship exceeds wealth as a source of happiness. Ask yourself which has a greater influence on your satisfaction with life: your income orthe affection of your intimate companions and the well-being of your children? Conversely, which would make you more depressed: a reduction in salary ora divorce and isolation from your friends? Capitalism succeeds in creating material riches, but it is less successful in building companionable societies and protecting family integrity. But developing countries still have much work to do in pursuing material wealth, where a rise in productivity still greatly increases happiness. Forpoorer countries, the time is not yet ripe fora shift in priorities from wealth accumulation to companionship. Can we afford to believe that the pursuit of material gain will lead to self-fulfillment? We should continue to enjoy our wealth in good company, orelse we may find that it is not satisfying. Which of the following is the least likely cause of one\'s unhappiness in advanced countries? 【单选题】

A.Loss of friends.

B.Reduction of income.

C.Death of a family member.

D.Divorce.

正确答案:B

答案解析:Capitalism (advanced countries) succeeded in creating material riches, but it is less successful in building companionable societies and protecting family integrity. (But developing countries still have much work to do in pursuing material wealth, where a rise in productivity still greatly increases happiness. Forpoorcountries, the time is not yet ripe fora shift in priorities from wealth accumulation to companionship.

4、ExerciseWhether ornot exercise adds to the length of life, it is common experience that a certain amount of regular exercise improves the health and contributes a feeling of well-being. Furthermore, exercise which involves play and recreation, and relieves nervous tension and mental fatigue in so doing, is not only pleasant but beneficial. How much and what kind of exercise one should take merits careful consideration. The growing child and the normal young man and young woman thrill with the exhilaration of strenuous sports. They fatigue to the point of exhaustion but recover promptly with a period of rest. But not so with those of middle age and beyond. Forthem moderation is of vital importance. Just how much exercise a person of a given age can safely take is a question hard to answer. Individual variability is too great to permit of generalization. A game of tennis may be perfectly safe forone person of forty but folly foranother. The safe limitforexercise depends on the condition of the heart, the condition of the muscles, the type of exercise, and the regularity with which it is taken. Two general suggestions, however, will serve as sound advice foranyone. The first is that the condition of the heart and general health should be determined periodically by careful, thorough physical examinations. The other is that exercise should be kept below the point of physical exhaustion. What type of exercise one should choose depends upon one\'s physical condition. Young people can safely enjoy vigorous competitive sports, but most older persons do bet ter to limitthemselves to less strenuous activities. Walking, swimming, skating are among the sports that one can enjoy and safely participate ____ throughout life. Regularity is important if one is to get the most enjoyment and benefit out of exercise.【单选题】
