1、Musical Training Can Improve Communication Skills American scientists say musical training seems to improve communication skills and language retardation. They found that developing musical skills involves the same process in the brain as learning how to speak. The scientists believe that could help children with learning disabilities. Nina Kraus is a neurobiologist at Northwestern University in Illinois. She says musical training involves putting together different kinds of information, such as hearing music, looking at musical notes, touching an instrument and watching other musicians. This process is not much different from learning how to speak. Both involve different senses. She further explains musical training and learning to speak each make us think about what we are doing. She says speech and music pass through a structure of the nervous system called the brain stem. The brain stem controls our ability to hear. Until recently, experts have thought the brain stem could not be developed orchanged. But ProfessorKranss and her team found that musical training can improve a person\'s brain stem activity. The study involved individuals with different levels of musical ability. They were asked to wear an electrical device that measures brain activity. The individuals wore the electrode while they watched a video of someone speaking and a person playing a musical instrument ----the cello. ProfessorKrauss says cellos have sound qualities similar to some of the sounds that are important with speech. The study found that the more years of training people had, the more sensitive they were to the sound and rhythm of the music. Those who were involved in musical activities were the same people in whom the improvement of sensory events was the strongest. ____ She says using music to improve listening skills could mean they hear sentences and understand facial expressions better. 【单选题】

2、Blasts from the Past1 Volcanoes were more destructive in ancient history. Not because they were bigger, but because the carbon they released wiped out life with greater ease.2 Paul Wignall from the University of Leeds was investigating the link between volcanic eruptions and mass extinctions. Not all volcanic eruptions killed off large numbers of animals, but all the mass extinctions over the past 300. million years coincided with huge formations of volcanic rock. To his surprise, the older the massive volcanic eruptions were, the more damage they seemed to do.3 Wignall calculated the "killing efficiency" forthese volcanoes by comparing the proportion of life they killed off with the volume of lava that they produced. He found that size forsize, older eruptions were at least 10 times as effective at wiping out life as their more recent rivals.4 The Permian extinction, forexample, which happened 250 million years ago, is marked by floods of volcanic rock in. Siberia that cover an area roughly the size of western Europe, Those volcanoes are thought to have pumped out about 10 gigatonnes of carbon as carbon dioxide, The global warming that followed wiped out 8 per cent of all marine genera at the time, and it took 5 million years far tire planet to recover.5 Yet 60 million years ago in the late Palaeocene there was another huge amount of volcanic activity and global-warming but no mass extinction. Some animals did disappear but things returned to normal within ten thousands of years, "The most recent ones hardly have an effect at all," Wignall says. He ignored the extinction which wiped out the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous, 65 million years ago, because many scientists believe it was primarily caused by the impact of an asteroid.6 Wignall thinks that older volcanoes had more killing power because more recent life forms were better adapted to dealing with increased levels of C02 Ocean chemistry may also have played a role. As the supercontinents broke up and exposed more coastline there may have been more weathering of silica rocks. This would have encouraged the growth of phytoplankton in the oceans, increasing the amount of C02 absorbed from the atmosphere.7 Vincent Courtillot, directorof the Paris Geophysical Institute in France, says that Wignall\'s idea is provocative. But he says it is incredibly hard to do these sorts of calculations. He points out that the killing power of volcanic eruptions depends on how long they fasted. and it is impossible to tell whether the huge blasts lasted forthousands ormillions of years.8 Courtillot also adds that it is difficult to estimate how much lava prehistoric volcanoes produced, and that lava volume may not necessarily correspond to carbon dioxide orsulphur dioxide emissions.Older eruptions were more devastating____.【单选题】

A.than more recent ones

B.the killing efficiency forolder eruptions

C.has remained controversial

D.Wignall\'s calculations as acceptable

E.has been mown to us all

F.his ideas

正确答案:A

答案解析:more recent ones较后来的火山爆发。填入后生成的句子不仅在语法上是正确的并且跟文章第一句话的意思差不多。

3、ExerciseWhether ornot exercise adds to the length of life, it is common experience that a certain ____ of regular exercise improves the health and contributes a feeling of well-being. Furthermore, exercise which involves play and recreation, and relieves nervous tension and mental fatigue in so doing, is not only pleasant but beneficial. How much and what kind of exercise one should take merits careful consideration. The growing child and the normal young man and young woman thrill with the exhilaration of strenuous sports. They fatigue to the point of exhaustion but recover promptly with a period of rest. But not so with those of middle age and beyond. Forthem moderation is of vital importance. Just how much exercise a person of a given age can safely take is a question hard to answer. Individual variability is too great to permit of generalization. A game of tennis may be perfectly safe forone person of forty but folly foranother. The safe limitforexercise depends on the condition of the heart, the condition of the muscles, the type of exercise, and the regularity with which it is taken. Two general suggestions, however, will serve as sound advice foranyone. The first is that the condition of the heart and general health should be determined periodically by careful, thorough physical examinations. The other is that exercise should be kept below the point of physical exhaustion. What type of exercise one should choose depends upon one\'s physical condition. Young people can safely enjoy vigorous competitive sports, but most older persons do bet ter to limitthemselves to less strenuous activities. Walking, swimming, skating are among the sports that one can enjoy and safely participate in throughout life. Regularity is important if one is to get the most enjoyment and benefit out of exercise.【单选题】

A.heaviness

B.highness

C.amount

D.number

4、The game requires us to find out two simple but effective ways to solve this problem.【单选题】

A.efficient

B.clever

C.stupid

D.easy

正确答案:D

答案解析:simple和easy都表示“简单的”;efficient:有效率的;clever:聪明的;stupid:愚蠢的。

5、Lower Body Fat Means Better Performance These days, fashion models and pop stars are not the only people who have to watch their waistline. Football players who miss a few kicks and let their belly hanging out a little too much are likely to be attacked by rabid fans oreven the president of a country. The latest football star to draw the attention of the "fat police" is Barcelona\'s Ronaldinho, 26. Last Friday, a Spanish sports daily published two photos of the Brazilian star without his shirt. One was taken in November 2003; the other was taken this month. In the most recent one, the star\'s waistline seems to have a little extra padding. Another Spanish sports daily published similar before-and-aider photos and argued that the star has "lost his explosiveness and velocity" and is "worn out". The cause, according to the news paper, is his poorphysical fitness. However, the player\'s coach, Frank Rijkaard, insists that he\'s satisfied with Ronaldinho\'s form and fitness. and after Barcelona\'s victory over Athletic Bibao on Sunday, Ronaldinho challenged photographers to take pictures of him when he took off his shirt. "I don\'t have anything to hide," he said. Fellow Brazilian ronaldo, 30, of Real Madrid, faced similar criticism before the 2006 World Cup. But the criticism didn\'t come from a bunch of sports reporters: It came from the president of Brazil. "So, what is it?" Brazil\'s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asked the national soccer team\'s coach in his office last June, according to the Associated Press. "Is he [ronaldo]fat ornot?" "He is very strong, president," Carlos Alberto Parreira reportedly said at the time. "He is not that boy anymore. His body type has changed. " The game of footfall demands that players put as much emphasis on fitness as they can do on dribbling, passing orshooting. During a proper training regimen, football players normally follow a load-fatigue-recovery pattern. They push their body toward a higher mark of fitness and experience a slight and brief drepin performance. Then they begin the recovery process, which will ideally carry their performance to an even higher plane. However, sometimes non-physical factors can influence a player\'s poorfitness. In Ronaldinho\'s case, forinstance, people, often unnamed, have blamed everything from the pressure of contract negotiations to personal problems and too many advertising commitments. People like football stars more than they like pop stars. 【单选题】

A.Right

B. Wrong

C.Not mentioned

正确答案:C

答案解析: 句子说的是:比起流行歌曲歌星来,人们更喜欢球星。文章没有提到。
