Random variables can be either discrete or continuous.

Discrete random variables take on a finite or countably infinite number of distinct values. Examples of discrete random variables include the number of heads in a series of coin flips, the number of cars passing through a toll booth in an hour, and the number of students in a classroom.

Continuous random variables, on the other hand, can take on any value within a certain range or interval. Examples of continuous random variables include the height of a person, the time it takes for a car to travel a certain distance, and the amount of rainfall in a given area.

The contents of a discrete random variable are a set of specific values, while the contents of a continuous random variable are values within a certain range or interval.
