A mutually exclusive project is a project where the acceptance of one project automatically precludes the acceptance of another project. In other words, if one project is chosen, the other project cannot be undertaken. For example, if a company has two options for investing in a project, building a new factory or expanding an existing one, the company can only choose one of the options.

On the other hand, an independent project is a project that can be undertaken alongside other projects. In this case, the acceptance or rejection of one project does not affect the acceptance or rejection of another project. For example, a company can invest in a new marketing campaign and at the same time invest in new equipment for the production line. These two projects are independent of each other.

In summary, the main difference between a mutually exclusive project and an independent project is that the former precludes the acceptance of another project, while the latter can be undertaken alongside other projects.
