题干:Filmhaspropertiesthatsetitapartfrompainting,sculpture,novels,andplays.Itisalso,initsmostpopularandpowerfulform,astorytellingmediumthatsharesmanyelementswiththeshortstoryandthenovel.Andsincefilmpresentsitsstoriesindramaticform,ithasevenmoreincommonwiththestageplay:Bothplaysandmoviesactoutordramatize,showratherthantell,whathappens.Unlikethenovel,shortstory,orplay,however,filmisnothandytostudy;itcannotbeeffectivelyfrozenontheprintedpage.Thenovelandshortstoryarerelativelyeasytostudybecausetheyarewrittentoberead.Thestageplayisslightlymoredifficulttostudybecauseitiswrittentobeperformed.Butplaysareprinted,andbecausetheyrelyheavilyonthespokenword,imaginativereaderscanconjureupatleastapaleimitationoftheexperiencetheymighthavebeenwatchingaperformanceonstage.However,thiscannotbesaidofthescreenplay,forafilmdependsgreatlyonvisualandothernovisualelementsthatarenoteasilyexpressedinwriting.Thescreenplayrequiressomuch”fillingin”byourimaginationthatwecannotreallyapproximatetheexperienceofafilmbyreadingascreenplay,andreadingascreenplayisworthwhileonlyifwehavealreadyseenthefilm.Thus,mostscreenplaysarepublishednottoreadbutrathertoberemembered.Still,filmshouldnotbeignoredbecausestudyingitrequiresextraeffort.Andthefactthatwedonotgenerally“read”filmsdoesnotmeanweshouldignoretheprinciplesofliteraryordramaticanalysiswhenweseeafilm.Literatureandfilmsdosharemanyelementsandcommunicatemanythingsinsimilarways.Perceptivefilmanalysisrestsontheprinciplesusedinliteraryanalysis,andifweapplywhatwehavelearnedinthestudyofliteraturetoouranalysisoffilms,wewillbefaraheadofthosewhodonot.Therefore,beforeweturntotheuniqueelementsoffilm,weneedtolookintotheelementsthatfilmshareswithanygoodstory.Dividingfilmintoitsvariouselementsforanalysisisasomewhatartificialprocess,fortheelementsofanyartformneverexistinisolation,Itisimpossible,forexample,toisolateplotfromcharacter:Eventsinfluencepeople,andpeopleinfluenceevents;thetwoarealwayscloselyinterwoveninanyfictional,dramatic,orcinematicwork.Nevertheless,theanalyticalmethodusessuchafragmentingtechniqueforeaseandconvenience.Butitdoessowiththeassumptionthatwecanstudytheseelementsinisolationwithoutlosingsightoftheirinterdependenceortheirrelationshiptothewhole.
