Passage 1

In the early days of the automobile, drivers had to be very careful. There were no traffic lights, no stop signs, and no speed limits. Drivers had to rely on their common sense to avoid accidents. But as the number of cars on the road increased, so did the number of accidents. It soon became clear that something had to be done to make driving safer.

One of the first things that was done was to put traffic lights at busy intersections. The first traffic light was installed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1914. At first, traffic lights were very simple. They had only two colors: red and green. The red light meant "stop" and the green light meant "go." Later, a yellow light was added to warn drivers that the light was about to change.

Another important safety measure was the stop sign. The first stop sign was used in Detroit, Michigan in 1915. Stop signs were placed at intersections to make drivers stop and look both ways before proceeding.

Speed limits were also introduced to make driving safer. The first speed limit was set in Connecticut in 1901. It was 12 miles per hour in the city and 15 miles per hour in the country. Today, speed limits are much higher, but they are still an important safety measure.

As cars became more popular, more safety features were added. Seat belts, airbags, and anti-lock brakes are just a few of the many safety features that are now standard on most cars.

Passage 2

In the world of business, there are many different kinds of companies. Some companies are very small, with just a few employees. Others are very large, with thousands of employees all over the world. Some companies make products, while others provide services. But no matter what kind of company it is, all companies have one thing in common: they need customers.

Customers are the people who buy a company's products or services. Without customers, a company cannot survive. That's why companies spend a lot of time and money trying to attract new customers and keep their existing customers happy.

One way that companies attract new customers is through advertising. Advertising is a way of telling people about a company's products or services. Companies use many different kinds of advertising, such as television commercials, magazine ads, and billboards. They also use the internet to advertise, with banner ads and pop-up ads on websites.

Another way that companies attract new customers is by offering special deals or discounts. For example, a store might offer a "buy one, get one free" deal to attract customers. Or a company might offer a discount to customers who buy a certain amount of products.

Once a company has attracted a customer, it's important to keep that customer happy. Happy customers are more likely to come back and buy more products or services. One way that companies keep their customers happy is by providing good customer service. This means answering customers' questions, solving their problems, and treating them with respect.
