题干:ThenumberofwomendirectorsappointedtocorporateboardsintheUnitedStateshasincreaseddramatically,buttheratioforfemaletomaledirectorsremainslow.Althoughpressuretorecruitwomendirectors,unlikethattoemploywomeninthegeneralworkforce,doesnotderivefromlegislation,itisneverthelessreal.Althoughsmallcompanieswerethefirsttohavewomendirectors,largecorporationscurrentlyhaveahigherpercentageofwomenontheirboards.Whenthechairsoftheselargecorporationsbeganrecruitingwomentoserveonboards,theyinitiallysoughtwomenwhowerechiefexecutiveofficers(CEOs)oflargecorporations.However,suchwomenCEOsarestillrare.Inaddition,theidealofsixCEOs(femaleormale)servingontheboardofeachofthelargestcorporationsisrealizableonlyifeveryCEOservesonsixboards.Thisraisesthespecterofdirectorovercommitmentandtheresultantdilutionofcontribution.Consequently,thechairsnextsoughtwomeninbusinessthathadtheequivalentofCEOexperience.However,sinceitisonlyrecentlythatlargenumbersofwomenhavebeguntoriseinmanagement,thechairsbegantorecruitwomenofhighachievementoutsidethebusinessworld.Manysuchwomenarewellknownfortheircontributionsingovernment,education,andthenonprofitsector.Thefactthatthewomenfromthesesectorswhowereappointedwereoftenacquaintancesoftheboard'schairsseemsquitereasonable:chairshavealwaysconsidereditimportantfordirectorstointeractcomfortablyintheboardroom.Althoughmanysuccessfulwomenfromoutsidethebusinessworldareunknowntocorporateleaders,thesewomenareparticularlyqualifiedtoserveonboardsbecauseofthechangingnatureofcorporations.Todayacompany’sabilitytoberesponsivetotheconcernsofthecommunityandtheenvironmentcaninfluencethatcompany’sgrowthandsurvival.Womenareuniquelypositionedtoberesponsivetosomeoftheseconcerns.Althoughconditionshavechanged,itshouldberememberedthatmostdirectorsofbothsexesareoverfiftyyearsold.Womenofthatgenerationwereoftenencouragedtodirecttheirattentiontowardeffortstoimprovethecommunity.Thisfactisreflectedinthecareerdevelopmentofmostoftheoutstandinglysuccessfulwomenofthegenerationnowintheirfifties,whocurrentlyserveoncorporateboards:25percentareineducationand22percentareingovernment,law,andthenonprofitsector.Oneorganizationofwomendirectorsishelpingbusinessbecomemoreresponsivetothechangingneedsofsocietybyraisingthelevelofcorporateawarenessaboutsocialissues,suchasproblemswiththeeconomy,governmentregulation,theagingpopulation,andtheenvironment.Thisorganizationalsoservesasaresourcecenterofinformationonaccomplishedwomenwhoarepotentialcandidatesforcorporateboards.
